Subject: Politics vs. Common Sense

Here's one for all of you to chew on... The Montana ANG, my home state, just reequipped with F-15s from Missouri (the unit that had the F-15 disintegrate in midair, but that's besides the point). It makes sense: the MANG has traditionally been an air defense unit, being as it is in the "top tier" of the US. Getting F-15s up here was cheered by both Democrats and Republicans from Montana alike--and to be fair, it was a Democrat (Max Baucus) that pushed the hardest for the MANG to go from a multirole F-16 unit to an air defense F-15 unit. Now, only a few months after the MANG went operational with its Eagles, it stands a very good chance of losing them. The reason? Dianne Feinstein of California wants them down there. Now tell me if that makes sense. The only threat California faces is its own stupidity, and a F-15 can't help with that. Her solution is to reequip the MANG with UAVs, a mission it is not suited for and doesn't want. Her reasoning is that the North Dakota ANG is getting Predators; therefore, Montana should get them too, because North Dakota and Montana are just the same, doncha know. I can understand the fact that the Soviet bomber threat no longer exists; the modern Russian bombers would stand off over Canada and launch cruise missiles. Still, it stands to reason that you'd want air defense units on the periphery of the nation. California already has a fighter unit (F-16s at Fresno), but Feinstein somehow thinks it's got to have F-15s too. Given her track record, I have a feeling her mindset is something like "Montana's a red state, so screw it." If there's a valid reason to convert an air defense unit to UAVs, fine. But I'm not sure Feinstein even knows what a UAV is, so I'm guessing this is strictly politics. Any guesses?

Definition of common sense: making intelligent, rational decisions based on good judgement in practical matters.

Definition of politics: esosteric, hypocrites with ego-driven agendas.

Common sense tells us that the air superiority fighters are slowly erroding and not being replaced, areas of coverage haven't changed, yet politicians will tell us that it is acceptable to use less effective platforms and justify it by amending the requirement due to a lesser perceived threat.

Yes, but... it certainly is possible that the needs truly have changed (in fact they are constantly changing to some degree), and thus the requirements truly should be changed.  If they change in a convenient direction, so much the better.  ;-)

Sigh....guess who's my Senator (or at least one of them)?

California would probably benefit significantly from having an ANG UAV sqaudron. Should they chose to base in in Southern California, opportunities for co-operation with the Marines at MCAS Miramar and Camp Pendleton would be opened up. While this might or might not ever be done, it could be a valuable option.

Plus, the UAVs could assume a maritime and border patrol role missions made all the more important by the growing rise of land and water-borne human smuggling and trafficking in the region.

F-15s would be nice, but as far as I can see, the F-16s are more than capable of handling the missions the CANG is expected to perform. In fact they've already done the air superiority mission at least temporarily, in the wake of the F-15 groundings.

Does California maintain a Naval Reserve component?

Global Hawks and Avengers make a lot of more sense as a fit there. We have a serious East Pacific smuggling problem and that is a naval matter.

As for the UAVs for the Air National Guard, I'd rather see Army National Guard units get them as those would be the ones that would have to police the border when things in Mexico go south.

The California Air National Guard should have a rocket launch unit to help out at Vandenberg. The US is short of practicing rocketeers and mathematicians. Those capitalist weanies at Silicon Valley and teaching weanies at JPL need to sign up and step up to the plate and get hands on. Learn by do, then pass it on to the next generation.
