Subject: RAAF: gloves are off... give us your best air force!
nyetneinnon    4/11/2008 3:28:24 AM
OK folks, this topic is intended as a catalyst to bring out a full-blown debate, vis-a-vis impending Aussie govt decision on procuring it's future air force composition.

So here is your $16 billion dollars... go buy AUS's Air Force!

Please feel free to use hypotheticals in your position, as in truth, aircraft on the plate such as the F-35 are in truth a big hypothetical question mark still today.

But please use details when considering your position; such as geo-political, reliability, timing/schedules, costs, a/c performance, capabilities, tactics (as needed over the next 25 yrs), flexibility of operation, adaptability and upgradability, etc...

I'll kick the discussion off by suggesting RAAF could Lease 50 additional Super Hornets for 6-10 years in 5 cosecutive blocks of 10 SH per year, the first block being leased for 10 yrs, with the final block leased for 6 yrs, accordingly.

These could be supplemented by MQ-Reaper maritime-patrol/strike drones.

Then in about 8 years out, AUS could decide with a better handle on things, what the heck to do :)

I take it from this you mean just ACG.

Replace all F-111C and HUG bugs NOW with Block2 F-18F SH.

Spend the old AIR6000 budget on getting at least 100 odd SH.

Of that 100, allocate about 16 to 6SQN as EF-18G's for ECM.

Develope a pod recon system to replace the existing RF-111C.

Operate SH until about 2020 and then look at replacing the most tired frames for either BAE Tiranus or NG X-47 UCAV's.

Other drones etc as mentioned in opening thread are funded separately under BAMS/HALE projects.

Fair plan, Drop.  I tend to concur with that concept, i.e. more SH' in some fashion and calculus or another.  Rather than F-35.  However, by 2020, if the thing is earning global acclaim as a super-reliable, under-rated capability/performer, then AUS could better ponder it as part of feasible mix.  I also tend to concur that perhaps in 10 years, the UCAS/V types will offer major capabilities which fighter manufacturers are careful not to over-hype today, in view of excess self-competition.  BTW, is there a Block III SH in the pipeline or hypothetical?  Would be interested in any such anticipated specs.

1 Nyet, would you explain your F-35 beef in words. in thoughts instead of feelings?  I see no reason why she won't fly and do the job.

2)  Betting the farm on drones - Quod licet Jovi non licet bovi.  It may be that the US has sufficient resources and infrastructure to sustain drone ops in a way that her friends cannot quite attain.  It might be easier, say, to jam drone commo for a nation with one satellite than for a nation with dozens, which can put up aerostats and all kinds of datalinky goodness, in rich redundancy.  I don't say Oz hasn't the tech tree, but wouldn't they be easier to jam than US/UK?  Unless of course they have total interoperability with and free access to all of our relevant assets.

Oh, they can do it, no doubt, but it will be more of a commitment than firing all the pilots and hiring lots of those Nintendo jockeys.  Everything one wants to do seems easier than it is; what we don't want seems harder.

Just remember we haven't seen squat yet in terms of jamming.   One good blackout could ruin your whole day.
