Subject: EF-111 Raven: The return. Pie in the sky thinking?
DropBear    3/17/2008 10:25:49 PM

Just reading some articles by my favourite phone salesman and this caught my eye...

The paper notes that if Australia continues to operate the F-111, it could provide invaluable
support for cooperation with our allies by bringing the EF-111 Raven back into service.
Such an initiative is likely to receive enthusiastic support from the USAF, which has been
struggling for several years to meet this requirement.
Self reliance has been a cornerstone of Australia?s defence policy to decades.

Now, if strategic military analysis was a form of hard currency, then Carlo wouldn't have a brass razoo to his name, but was there ever a chance, albeit tiny, that some within the USAF could still see a role for the Raven and hence lobby for reinstatement if the above were to be the case?

Curious.

The EF-111 Raven was an electronic warfare and jamming aircraft right?  And was withdrawn in the early 90's?

I am sure any equipment it used to carry has been surpassed, and there are numerous decent more modern airframes out there - so why bring it back?

Are fast jets even needed for the role?  You can fit a lot more in a cheaper to run airframe, such as with the ASTOR.

Maybe not in the war-weary Aardvark, but there is no reason why a regional bomber design couldn't be turned into a powerful standoff jammer and spoofer.

How do you feel about Backfires?
