The U.S. Air Force held a retirement ceremony for the F-117A Nighthawk at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. There were 59 production stealth aircraft built, and they have been in service for 27 years. Seven were lost, one in Serbia during combat. The survivors will be placed in recallable storage at their original base, the Tonapah airfield on the Nevada Test Ranges, by next month.

27 year old antiques that nobody else can yet imitate. They could still probably fly lazy 8's around the Kremlin at night with nobody the wiser. Pretty cool.

If the tech is still as relevant as you say, then it wouldn't be worth the risk of losing another one to be dissected in a lab somewhere for the highest bidder. I'm guessing that the maintenance burden for these things is disproportionately large, which is probably why they are going to be mothballed. Kind of a striking event though when you think about what these things represented.

RockyMTNClimber    Labor Intensive   3/10/2008 7:32:42 PM
The F117 required allot of ramp work between flights. every time a panel (or the landing gear) open the coatings had to be touched up with a real nasty resin that had to be stripped then re applied. Ground crews went bonkers during high cycle events like GWI. The newer planes are labor intensive too but not nearly as much.

It is amazing to think what might have been in say 1985 if the Bear decided to challenge US in Europe. The Nighthawks sure woke em up over Baghdad one night in January. It was supposedly the most hotly defended place on earth. With the exception of Moscow.

Pretty impressive that the F-117 is being retired before any other nation has stealth fighters in production.
