Subject: F-18F scores gun kill on F-22A

It had to happen some day. I guess the pilot of this Super Bug is pretty proud of himself. Here are two HUD captures from a VFA-11 F/A-18F acting as Red Air against an F-22A: HUD shot 1 Here's an alternate link... in case the other two are broken. Looks like the Raptor found himself in front of a slow Super Hornet, which is not where anybody wants to be. The F-18F is at 15K feet, 20 degrees AOA, Mach 0.36, pulling 1.7G, with a peak previous G of 7.6 for the fight. HUD shows he has squeezed the trigger. It's not exactly what you'd call "comfortably saddled up in his six" or anything like that -- it's clearly a high deflection shot -- but it does show the Super Hornet can point its nose when it wants to.

Yeah, the F-22A pilot really fouled up on that one... Played the SuperHornet's fight. While the F-22A is more manuverable than the F-15C, I can see it having a hard time versus Vipers and Superbugs in WVR. But then again, thats not its fighting style. However, it may boil down to skill, and maybe a wee bit of luck too.

Well, that's the thing about WVR. You can be in an aircraft that theoretically flies rings around your opponent, but get complacent against a superior pilot and you're dead anyway. F-4S drivers in the 80s "killed" pilots in every model of F-teen in DACT exercises too, because even though they were flying comparatively underpowered and sluggish fighters, they knew their plane inside and out and had loads of experience. Re: skill and luck, there's always the old aviator saying, "I'd rather be lucky than good any day".

Oops, hit enter too soon. But yeah, in this case, I'd love to read a transcript of the whole fight. All we know about this is the SH is down to 240 knots, 60 or so degrees bank angle, 25 degrees nose down and and pretty close to the Raptor. There's no telling from these photos whether this is after aggressive maneuvering or if this is the initial setup and the goal is for the Raptor to try and get out of the situation.

Hmmm...Navy 1 Air Force 0 Can see this being misused all over the internet! "See I told you the SH could destroy anything in its path......" Nice picky, though.

Well, clearly if USN superbugs can sweep the skies of F-22s then our RAAF hugbug drivers should have no troubles with them.

Right on. RAAF rules (well when we give them decent planes that is).

So no one is bothered that a super expensive, super stealthy, super manueverable plane was brought down by a last generation plane and the pilots can be assumed to have equal skill?
