Subject: Is it wrong to love the Panavia Tornado?
skrip00    1/18/2006 10:15:37 PM
Something about that aircraft that I love. Its design is sleek, and it can truck a good bomb load. Flies low and fast and penetrates deep into enemy airspace. Kinda reminds me of a time when aircraft had to fly lower than the trees to avoid tracers and missiles to deliver bombloads on target in support of friendlies.

Perhaps the UK should ditch the EU and work with Australia on a maritime strike aircraft. The Tornado and the F-111 are very similar in a lot of respects.

I still think they should work together for a "Superfin" project. New engines, airframe, avionics, radar. Make it a multi-role swing wing. It will be cheaper than the Typhoon mess! Not to mention useful in bomb trucking. Even though the USAF is moving the the F-35... they still have a conventional bomber fleet and F-15Es for their heavy mud moving. The Euros dont. This is the best route for them! :)

Why the need to install newer, more powerful engines? The IDS can fly at M1.4 and has ample thrust to lug two Hunting JP233's as well as two Hindenburger's. Doesn't seem to want for thrust. It is already somewhat of a Ferrari of mud movers.

"From what I see the derated F404 is still 87" in length while the F405 is 76.6"" Jetpipe and exhaust nozzle are parts of F404 engine, but at least in Mk 50 Hawk the jetpipe is part of aircraft, not the Adour engine. (And in this picture link it seems to be the same with F405) So mayby the lenght is not a factor. -- "The EJ200 is 200 pounds less in weight and revs out to its limiter a few seconds faster than the F414." Mayby true, but F404 is the most fast reving engine around.

That was true until the F414 became electronically restricted. The prototypes were not slower than an F404. I bet an unrestricted EJ200 would also outspin the F404. Modern engines have all those fancy dancy controllers to keep them from shredding.

"Perhaps the UK should ditch the EU and work with Australia on a maritime strike aircraft. The Tornado and the F-111 are very similar in a lot of respects". Maybe both of you could pressure the DoD to procure the F-123 (extended YF-23) and also replace our F-15Es in addition to your Tonados and F-111s? Of course we have at least 15 years life left in the Es.

We will be getting the F-35A mud muppet and there isn't a heck of a lot we can do about it.

I just wanted someone else to yell at them. I was hoping that you could get the 123 in addition to the 35s.

No, the Tornado offers some cappasities that the Typhoon and the other ECDs do not. I also like the Tornado, but I like the ADV type.
