Why are you buying tanks to fight aborigines?" B. "You don't have any enemies that necessitate having some of the most advanced tanks in the world ((insert attempt at humor to illustrate point using exaggeration regarding Australia)), so why buy them?" I'd have to say that when I saw the comment I took it as being chucked into the room as an example of the above... if anything the worst I saw it was as a piece of sarcasm.... so I certainly didn't see it as racist - unless there is another part of the conversation that I'm missing..

The reference was to why do you need a new tank....what enemies do you have that would require a new tank.... exapand that....the only people moderately hostile to the gov. were(are) some abor.-so why would you need a new tank as a new tank would indicate a new threat...and what new threats are there that........ never mind..... relax.... meditate..... do some yoga....

Without naming names...I cant decide weither to bang my head on the keyboard or to believe some people are actually making a deal out of a serious question laced with an attempt at low grade humor(by the way....it was a tad bit funny{all due respect to the abor.]) like: A sailor overhears two marines talking "Boy, I'm glad I joined the marines. I would rather be called a 'jarhead' than a 'squid.'" To which the sailor responds: "Do you know what a squid is?" The marines shake their head no and shrug their shoulders. "A squid is a higher form of marine life." the sailor chuckles... Now, that might be a weak joke, but it is in fun...As a former marine, I would not be offended by the put-down, nor should a sailor get offended by being called a squid, yet I have seen people take an innocent comment like that and get royally pissed off....(to one, it was fighting words) so the moral of the story is.....CHILL... well, I guess the bottom line is that some comments need to be carefully crafted so as to ensure that they are clear in their intent. australians tend to take comments about aborigines in a sensitive manner - eg, replace aborigine with eskimo, native indian etc... and you can get a feel for parallels. as for militant aborigines. well to use the vernacular. there are bugger all. the most visible of note was an activist named michael mansell who was what some referred to as a "token aboriginal" - ie, one who professed identification with the culture, but who was also roundly condemned by mainstream aboriginal activists or proponents of change. there has never ever been a militant group (as in take up arms against the govt of the day). Culturally its anathema to them and at an anthropological level its usefull looking at how aborigines and maoris (as an extremis comparison) have dealt with issues of cultural nationalism. my suggestion is that the easiest thing to do when crafting such responses is to qualify yourself early - it'll save a lot of grief. it'll will also clear up any perception that you might be grenading a topic to get a reaction. ;) cheers, gf

Apparently China, North Korea and Iraq are going to invade Oz and we will need tanks to defend our citezenry (sarcasm). Frankly, I think the only good use of Oz having tanks is so the RAAF can practice plinking them (serious). I am as excited about MBTs for Oz as I am about buying new artillery boomsticks. Not!!!

In an ideal world we'd be co-developing Collins Mk2 with the Japanese - eg an Oyashio Mk2. Failing that (and that's self evident that its not achievable under their current constitution) then I'd still be picking German kit. I'd only be going to French kit if we established very stringent caveats in place. The problem with going French is that we'd risk existing tech transfers with other countries - and to be blunt the tech agreements that we have in place with a few other countries is worth far more than what the French could bring to the table with a localised Scorpene (eg)
