Subject: apache vs. super cobra
jase    7/28/2003 9:16:23 AM
assuming the ah-1z version of the supercobra could be compared to the most recent apache longbow, which attack helicopter is the best? I spoke with a huey pilot who has flown both the supercobra and the apache, and he prefers the apache. But I always liked the look and the versatility of the supercobra. Any opinions on which is the superior chopper?

If your getting multiple hits from a 23 mil your doing something wrong .My CO is a former UH/AH 1 Pilot but was mainly a slick guy . He said he had the chance to fly I believe the J model and the W .He said his unit was using the J in The GUlf War! He said some holes from Vietnam were visible that had been patched up in the early 70s. I think this argument is like comparing the b 29 to the B 17 one is more fancier but one took more use . I dont doubt the Apachie survivability but why not just keep updating a tried and true system such as the cobra. I still get disgusted because the army got rid of its OH 6s for bell 206s . Yea its got a longer range but its a lot louder and less manuverable. .So i guess it should be left up to a development team such as when the F22 and f23 faced off

TriggaFingaz    Apache vs. Supercobra.... tough question   1/4/2004 5:59:30 AM
The AH-1 Cobra series has got more LOOKS than the Apache, even that's a tough decision since I love them both. The AH-64D Longbow has better night fighting capabilities and possesses radar, I believe it has higher payload, correct me if wrong. However the USMC AH-1W/Z Supercobra has a wider variety of weapons to choose from- they use both TOWs and Hellfires for AT missiles, Apaches only use Hellfires. AH-1W/Z can also use Sidearm, Apaches so far not cleared. It's a tossup whether the Apache's M230 chaingun is better than the M197 used by the AH-1W/Z. The M230 is said to be more unreliable, but it is more effective vs light armoured vehicles and has 1200 rounds compared to the M197's 750. Since I'm not a pilot I can't tell which one is better in terms of manoueverbility. Both choppers are very talented and will *murder* armour and infantry if used correctly.

Considering the super cobra z model has air to air capabilities and can carry sidewinder and stinger missiles and the apache cant, a super cobra would win a dogfight everytime. The super cobra z also has newer better targeting systems, can carry more array of weapons, and can carry more wieght in weapons you have to take that into consideration. The sc z is less expensive and apaches are complete maintenance sluts, I'd go with the super cobra z everytime. And the French tiger attack helicopter is so overrated along with Russian hinds and havoks

I was apparently I need to do my homework. Didn't realize this thread was like 10 years old before the Zulu viper was operational so yea apache probably would be better
