Subject: 600 British Army personnel to be transferred to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines
Exemplo Ducemus    1/1/2006 8:25:21 PM
Saw the above 2 days ago which referred to a report from The Times but have been unable to source it. If I rcall there was a report some 6 months or so ago in a UK naval magazine where the Commandant General flew this kite citing the immediate operational requirement for a battalion of infantry to form a 4th regular commando. From memory he added that for the Royal Marines to generate the necessary manpower from their own resources would not be impossible but would take some time to achieve the required manpower ceiling of 7800 (?). Does anyone have any idea where the Director of Infantry will find the necessary 600 - I thought a RM Cdo was 750 strong. Bearing in mind hollowed out battalions, Companies of Territorial Army personnel making up to strength regular battalions for operational tours. Would this be a complete battalion being re-roled or a call for individuals? Any informed thoughts?

From a position of blissful ignorance, I would guess that the Commando Bn of The Rifles will/would be formed from volunteers from all the other four Bn. This elite Bn would be something to train towards. Enterance to the course and subsequently the Bn might be permitted for other army units.

It's generally considered that the 1st Btn the Rifles based at Chepstow will form the "commando" battalion. Expect them to be permanently assigned and to have the same role as the RM. I don't know whether they will be one of the 23 brigaded battalions or the 24th. My overall feeling is that this proposal (which first came to light in Feb 2005) was floated after the Dec 04 defence review, and so there is a chance that they will be a 24th brigaded unit. We won't though until the TOE of the 8 brigades is finally published.

>>If they undertake the all arms commando course they will earn themselves the RM berret.<< No, they'll have to earn the Commando beret. Which is green. The Royal Marines beret is dark blue with a red tombstone which is where the capbadge is placed.

"The Royal Marines beret is dark blue" Really? I have never seen a RM in a blue beret - is it what they wear before passing their commando course?

"Really? I have never seen a RM in a blue beret - is it what they wear before passing their commando course?" Yeah, nods wear it until the start of the Commando Course, when they're awarded the Cap Comforters on completion of a six-mile speed march at the start of week 26. When the BBC has coverage of a major memorial event next, keep an eye out for veterans wearing the beret I described. Afterall, what do you think Royal wore before the second world war?

And during and after WW2 until all trained RM were cdo. Remember in 1945 there were all sorts of RM units even if most of the MNBDO had folded there was still some AA not to mention various Seabee equivalent units in the Pacific region (the Assault Regts RM on DDay and the weeks after would also have worn blue berets (not black!)), not to mention the landing craft crews.
