I'm reluctant to give credence to anything put out by the United Nations can the British contingent provide some insight.

Scotland tops list of world's most violent countries
By Katrina Tweedie

A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America.
England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.

The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults.

Violent crime has doubled in Scotland over the past 20 years and levels, per head of population, are now comparable with cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Tbilisi.

The attacks have been fuelled by a ?booze and blades? culture in the west of Scotland which has claimed more than 160 lives over the past five years. Since January there have been 13 murders, 145 attempted murders and 1,100 serious assaults involving knives in the west of Scotland. The problem is made worse by sectarian violence, with hospitals reporting higher admissions following Old Firm matches.

David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow?s Victoria Infirmary, said that the figures were a national disgrace. ?I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence. Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world,? he said.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police?s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

The study, by the UN?s crime research institute, found that 3 per cent of Scots had been victims of assault compared with 1.2 per cent in America and just 0.1 per cent in Japan, 0.2 per cent in Italy and 0.8 per cent in Austria. In England and Wales the figure was 2.8 per cent.

Scotland was eighth for total crime, 13th for property crime, 12th for robbery and 14th for sexual assault. New Zealand had the most property crimes and sexual assaults, while Poland had the most robberies.

Chief Constable Peter Wilson, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, questioned the figures. ?It must be near impossible to compare assault figures from one country to the next based on phone calls,? he said.

?We have been doing extensive research into violent crime in Scotland for some years now and this has shown that in the vast majority of cases, victims of violent crime are known to each other. We do accept, however, that, despite your chances of being a victim of assault being low in Scotland, a problem does exist.?

I spent a couple of Days in Edinburgh last year and was much surpised by the street crime I saw. Of the course of a friday and saturday. I was personaly assualted by a a drunken kid who wanted to "kick a yanks ass." He was too drunk to pose a threat so I pushed him over. I watch two police foot chases, three or four other arrests, another drunken kid throw a trash can into a store window, three street fights. My friend lived there and was hosting me for the weekend said that it was pretty normal and the city was having trouble with drunken mobs on the weekends.

Wellington once said that they may be bastards, but they are our bastards. The violent tendency in British society is an asset drawn upon of old to build a military that rivals any in the world. The current lack of focus and use of this tendency is inexcusable. Use it or solve it, don't leave it to fester into open revolt and criminality.

I honestly think the only way to solve this is national service, instill discipline and an understanding of how disciplin and training will overcome mindless agression. It is strange however that this culture appears to be unique to he UK. I am sure that Germany, France, spain etc have problems with certain aspects of society, bt I really dont think they have anywhere near the problem the Uk doeas with mindless violence on the weekends in wvery city and town from the largest to the smallest.

At the risk of being controversial, the reason the crime rates are so high in Scotland are down to one thing - the high percentage of people of Irish descent in the country.  A lot of Irish immigrants came into the country for work during the 18th C and, to be fair, were treated pretty harshly at times. But the fact is, for one reason or another, their descendents account for the majority of prison inmates in Scotland today.

I had access to the records of the criminally insane in Scottish Mental Hospitals, and the majority of them were of Irish decent.  You can't watch the news here without noticing most of the crimes involve people with Irish names.  This is something, in this PC age, that isn't allowed to be acknowledged at all.  But if  people are going to give bare statistics suggesting Scotland has such a crime problem, the least they can do is discuss the reasons why.

Ahh yes, It's GENETICS isn't it? and why does Northern ireland have the lowest rate of violent crime in the world/ with the Republic of Ireland having the second lowest?
There really should be some form of moderator here to deal with such garbage? England and Wales has the second highest, with New Zealand and Australia having twice the rate of the USA, it is to do with policing, poverty, and education.
i might suggest that racist or genetically based arguments  that have no merit be deleted.

Wow, as someone who's been to N. Ireland on many, many occasions, I call BS. If Northern Ireland has the lowest violent crime rate in the World the this whole planet is in even worse shape than I thought!

I don't suppose you have a sorce to back that up do you?

Having lived in one of the large cities in the midlands for most my life I am not surprised and avoid town centres at night if possible because you are now almost guaranteed to see someone get stabbed, glassed or beaten to a pulp. Its all fuelled by drink with a mentality that the more you can drink the better time you can have. People are almost proud by how drunk they can make themselves. It is a real problem throughout the UK but mainly confined to city centres on the weekends at night. I prefer the local in a village near where I live.

I have lived in edinburgh for 5 years and am yet to see that level of violence all at once, only after particularly harsh hearts/Hibs games (or Hearts/celtic) does it get that bad.

Boredom is a major factor. The UK got named the worst place for young people to grow up in the developed world. Whilst growing up in Stoke-on-Trent which is one of the most under-developed cities in the country there was simply nothing for us to do other than hang around outside shops, tresspass wherever we could and intentially get into police chases just for the 'fun' of it.

You don't notice how bad it is untill you travel outside of the UK. Whilst living in a Kitzbuhel in Austria a couple of years ago young people had plenty to keep themselves occupied (and this isn;t including the obvious ski slopes). There was an Ice Rink in the town, a climbing wall, curling lanes, very good tennis courts, good football facilities as well as a very good public transport network to all the surronding towns and villages. All this in a town on less than 20,000 people is unthinkable in the UK!

The two things the UK isn't short of is pubs and take away restaurants! When the only thing the youth has to do is drink alcohol it should be no surprise that they grow up acting like this. Someone us have the intelligence to recognise and fix our mistakes, others just think going out on a weekend, getting absolutely shít faced then getting in a fight afterwards is a neccasary part of life.

And despite having the intelligence to recognise my past mistakes, I don't have the intelligence to write a paragraph without spelling mistakes!

I know it's an old story, but jeez the UK media are pathetic! You have to take this stuff with a huge grain of salt. Check out these stats, they're hardly anymore believable. lol
