Subject: Trafalgar 200/IFOS
Jack Tarr    6/24/2005 5:56:25 AM
Just wondering if anyone is heading to Pompey for either of the events? Just in case no-one knows what I'm talking about, details can be found here: link link Warships have already started gathering in the solent for the international fleet review. There's 1 RN Carrier, 1 foreign LPH type carrier, 1 "tall ship", and I spotted some kind of foreign large destroyer/cruiser entering Portsmouth Harbour yesterday morning.(I drive along the sea front on the way to work. I can't give exact ship types/names as I only get glimpses.....gotta concentrate on where I'm driving!) I won't be able to go to the IFOS, but I will be taking a wander along Southsea Common to rubberneck. Will try to get some Phot's.

I hope to see lots of coverage of these events on the BBC, after all it is tax-payer money putting it on.

RFA Hurst Point is one of 6 Point class ship RO-RO ferries. 31 RN warships, in a few years time this number may represent the total RN surface fleet. Donk

Giblet: I wonder if we could take advantage of Trafalgar 200 to sink the whole small UK navy to avenge your treachery attack on Mers El Kebir (my grand father was grively wounded there on Bretagne) We have 1297 dead so half US in Pearl harbor except we were attacked without warning by an ally.So worst than Japaneses. Our fleet was badly trapped and when admiral Gensoul understood that British would fire it was too late to put ourselve in battle position successfully. It is sad Gensoul did not realise this earlier to put ourselve in battle position against Sommerville H force. It was dishonourable to obey to UK orders while we have given our word of honour our fleet will not be used against UK. link Sad day for Ad Gensoul who was an englophile and who has to fight agaisnt UK officers he knows personnaly as friends like Holland and Sommerville. Monstrous betrayal nothing justify. Avenge that ! Sink UK fleet during Trafalgar 200!

"I wonder if we could take advantage of Trafalgar 200 to sink the whole small UK navy to avenge your treachery attack on Mers El Kebir" The French fleet there was a potentially major threat to the UK and allied force - the fact that they did not come over to fight as Free-French forced the British action. "It was dishonourable to obey to UK orders while we have given our word of honour our fleet will not be used against UK." The 'word of honour' meant nothing, the concern was that the ships would be used by the Germans, NOT that Gensoul was going to become Hitler's favourite Admiral! The simple truth is that captured equipment was used quite widely by the Germans - look at the number of Czech tanks they used!

FS I don?t really want to get into a heated discussion with you over this, though I?m sure that others may well, but Mers El Kebir need not have happened, all Admiral Gensoul had to do was scuttle his ships or turn them over to the RN. Petains assurances meant nothing, the Germans used your tanks, your newly completed submarine pens. While I don?t doubt that Admiral Gensoul was a decent honourable man, not all of the French high command were, many were pro German. Given the balance of power in the med at the time, Admiral?s Cunningham & Somerville had little choice to take the actions that they did. Now before answering please try to put yourself in their shoes, if you had to make the decision regarding Mers El Kebir, would you have risked the Germans getting their hands on the French Fleet. As for your Grandfather, hope that he survived his wounds, mine did, he served in North Africa & was wounded by Vichy forces. Donk

History has shown there was no risk: French respect their word of honour when they gave it. Even with Mers El Kebir we sank our fleet, when German tried to take it in 43. A crime and a odious betrayal.Nothing more.

Donkey : my grand father survided but handicaped for life for its left arm and was dumb for more than 80%.A 380 shell makes big noise for sure when you are close. It even doesn't seem he got any hatred for British after that .In fact he avoided to speak about this event all its life. But it not an excuse for British. Mers El Kebir is a spot on your flag.Nothing more. French would not have done that in the same way but would have asked garantees like having inspectors or something like that. You have deserved Perfidious Albion name like that unless Nelson which did gallant fight. They was no risk our fleet in our free zone could be taken by German. Nothing similar of war seizures German have done in occupied zone like tanks or planes.
