Or should they have waited a day or two to give him a chance of being released?

Do the British treat UK lives with more importance than their Afgan Translators?

They shouldn't launch the operation in the first place, and either let NYT pay the ransom or let terrorists behead Mr. Farrell.

But, Noooo~~~~

They choose to do the right thing, and the outcome isn't that good. The operation is half success, as Mr. Farrell was rescued but the translator, whom he brought into the harms way, died during the operation. The vermins in the media attacked British military immediately. So here is what I think UK military should do in the future: any mentally disordered reporter/journalist goes into Taliban territory and get kidnapped by those terrorist bandits, they themselves figure out ways to get out of the situation. No more military rescue and waste of soldiers lives on them.

Why should British forces pass up on  a good oppertunity for killing some enemy terrorists?

There is one thing being kidnapped from a 'safe' area and then being rescued.
It's another thing to be rambling about and being captured - you can't expect to take those risks without some responsibility for the outcomes and both the journo and the translator knew the risks.

The journalist and the NYT need to take some responsibility.
You can imagine the whining if the Brits told them to get stuffed and find their own way out - oh, the outrage!!!
