Subject: Ottoman Empire and Hungary
Pars    7/9/2005 11:38:08 AM
One Hungarian gentleman of this list asked me if Hungary lost population during Ottoman invasion. I do not remember who and when. According to "Atlas of World population history", Hungary (Transylvania not included) had aprox. 1,25 million population when Ottoman empire invaded. After 150 years of occupation they still had the same population. The reason given in the atlas for this is Hungary being continous battleground between Holy Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire. Transylvania (majority of the population was Hungarian) on the other hand had a steady increase of population being more safe.
