Subject: How Christianity lead to Rome's Demise
Pelopanisian    3/4/2006 9:47:21 AM
I believe Rome fell because of a few factors. First, they became to large to govern themselves effectivly and safely. Second, there was too much spending by upper class romans at the cost of the empire. Plus the barbarian invasions. But, I believe that the biggest reason Rome fell, was Christianity. Christianity made Roman soldiers too weak and harmed their martial spirit. They no longer were the great masters of their empire.

....Christianity made Roman soldiers too weak and harmed their martial spirit. .... I suggest you spend a little more time with Mithras, like the Roman soldiers did. The empire decayed from a variety of sources, not least of which was poisoning in from the lead pipes that were used in plumbing. The Roman soldier was ALWAYS top-notch, even during the decay of the latter empire. Whether thru the infantry or the later calvary, the roman soldier was more than capable of defeating the barbarian hordes, and did so time and again - WHEN properly led and not out-positioned. (Adrianopolis come to mind). I suggest you dig a little deeper here - or get your hands on some older issues of Strategy and Tactics magazine. swhitebull

I take it you've never heard of Oliver Cromwell or Thomas Jonathan(Stonewall) Jackson.

There were a number of reasons for the demise of Rome, Christianity NOT being one of them - on the contrary. The church meeting at nicaea in 325 the christian church agrees on a common gospel, which in turn makes it appropiate for being the uniting force in the Roman empire - the emperor changed a bit to often (no pension plan) for stability. Rome did not degrade - it just didn't keep ahead.
