Subject: Grant vs Lee, Sherman vs Lee, and Grant vs J. Johnston.

Here are three interesting questions.

1. Who do you think was a better general between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee??

2. Who do you think was a better general between William T. Sherman and Robert E. Lee??

3. Who do you think was a better general between Ulysses S. Grant and Joseph E. Johnston??

In my opinion, those four were the best generals of the war, with the exception of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. I think he would have been South's second-in-command if he had not been killed. Joseph Johnston proved that he was able to beat Sherman when Sherman did a frontal attack on his army. It was Davis' fatal mistake in relieving Johnston from command.

I don't know how much credit a general can claim for his dug-in troops repelling a frontal assault, Vietasianfox ... it's not really a rare event.

If Johnston had beaten Sherman later at Peachtree Creek, he could have hung his hat off that, but we'll never know how that would have turned out - attacking didn't seem to be his 'thing'. Certainly, the more aggressive John Bell Hood carried out Johnston's intention to attack there and failed ...

1. At the risk of selling Grant short, I would say that Lee was the better of the two. I believe that Grant would have acknowledged Lee as the better general.

2. As a leader of men, Lee probably was better but as a strategist, Liddell Hart seemed to believe Sherman was the outstanding general of the whole war.

3. I would try to characterize this comparison.
