89 years ago the Meuse-Argonne Offensive was in full swing. Among the most famous actions of the offensive: Major Whittlesey's battalion pushed ahead of his regiment's attack, was cut off, and became known as "The Lost Battalion" on October 2; Corporal (later sergeant) Alvin C. York killed approximately 20 Germans (many with headshots) and captured 132 prisoners on October 8; First Lieutenant (later Captain) Sam Woodfill accompolished a feat of arms similar to York's on October 12, when his company was held up buy German machine gun emplacements. All three men were later awarded the Medal of Honor.
