Subject: USS Sable / USS Wolverine - The WWII Paddlewheel Aircraft Carriers
djv1255    6/18/2006 11:54:09 AM
The U.S.S. Wolverine and U.S.S. Sable, both former Great Lakes passenger steamers, were a unique part of World II history in many ways. The ships were powered by two side paddlewheels which turn in the same direction. The U.S. Navy had not used paddlewheel vessels in the active fleet for many years but many of the navy pilots learned to land on an aircraft carriers on these ships.

I am trying to honor the men that trained and served on the U.S.S. Wolverine and U.S.S. Sable by givng them a place to tell their stories and show any pictures they wish to share.

It is the Wolverine that is in a Victory at Sea episode isn't it?

Flatspin    Building a Scale Model   12/25/2006 12:38:00 AM
Excellent pictures of the USS Sable under construction. I'm very interested in these ships for a number of reasons. I'm former Navy and from Michigan. I was suprised to find that there were once carriers on the Great Lakes and even more suprised to learn that they were paddle-wheeled coal-burners! I've just recently learned that Former President George W. Bush qualified in his Avenger on one or both of these ships.

Information on these ships is very difficult to find. Pictures are nearly impossible from what I've seen in my searches. I'm actually interested in constructing a model from scratch of one of these ships and need some fairly detailed pictures to do it. The Sable under construction linked above is an excellent start.

If anybody has more pictures or specifications on these ships I would greatly appreciate them.

There are models in 1/1250 scale (recognition models) of both ships by the German company Hai.  They are available from Morning Sunshine Models for about $35 each.  This is a link to their website:

Here is a link to an AllTheWEb search for pictures.  It shows three or four photos of the model:
