I thought that each of these 2 "commando olymipcs" had only been attended by non western nation armed forces. Mostly arabs from memory.
I seem to recall they were more akin to the "special commando olympics"… or determining the Best of Whats Left.
Must go look them up again.

I have never been a fan of "who can shoot the best" type competitions. If one does not have the proper air support or satellite communications, helicopter support, artillery or missiles on call, its all just a shooting competition.

I doubt China will ever develop abilities as good as the British SAS (who largely setup or served as models for all of the worlds super elite commando forces) mainly due to their lack of wartime experience.

I agree that they are years behind, but, generals all love small training wars.
Going on recent Chinese bellicosity, i've little doubt that they'll have just such a one on their hands sooner rather than later.
They'll have ample time to train up their special forces.

A bit of history, the SAS were not the original Special Forces. The Army Commandos were formed in late 1940 following Churchill's directive to "set Europe Ablaze". The Lofoten Raid (Op Claymore) in March 1941 was the first commando operation. Each commando was a few hundred strong and they almost always operated as a unit (ie not small teams). The Royal Marines also got into the act forming identical commandos, and army and RM commandos were grouped into four commando brigades (eventually Far East, Med, 2 in NWE). In Nov 1943 the Cdo Bdes were grouped under a 2* Special Services (SS) Group, this also included the 'Special Boat Unit (all arms)'. The first 'small team' special force was No 1 Long Range Patrol, formed in N Africa in June 1940. This evolved into the Long Range Desert Group. In July 1941 'L Det SAS Bde' was formed by David Stirling (the title was deception rather than actuality).
