U.S. Army Delta Force and The British SAS are the most capable SF units in the world, especially when it comes to counter-terrorism. Italian, Austrian, German GSG9 are glorified SWAT teams.

You guys are all a bunch of clowns. Spec Op operators would laugh if they read about you guys boasting about who can do this and who can do that. They get the job done but don't go around after looking for applause. The Pom SAS are very good, the Aussie SAS are very good SEAL are very good etc etc etc. They are all pretty special, hence the name special forces.

What makes a good special forces unit? My opinion, not in order. Quality of men entering the unit; (high standards, so the few that enter 'know' they are an elite group, as well as building respect and espirit de corps. Flexibilty on equipping: Having the freedom and budget to go and get what they want, rather than waiting for regular procurment process. Credibility: The spec op unit has to have a high degree of credibility with the potential enemy, the regular forces and friendly forces. If the french sent the FFL to work with the SAS, they simply wouldn't have the credibility- though the training, selection etc might be as tough. Trust: Two directions. The Government must trust the unit to achieve the objective without embarrassing the govt. That means understanding the role, limitations and strenghts of the unit. Trust2: The Unit must trust the Government not to hang them out to dry if anything goes wrong. Spec ops are high risk, and if commanders feel that they will be blamed if something goes wrong, they wiil take a lower risk alternative. Who dares, wins and all that Jazz. Higher command having a good understanding of their role in operations: The SAS were used as a full squadron in Afganistan, which in their view was a waste since a troop and a regular infantry unit could have done the job. Using the Spetz. as riot troops, ditto. Training! Constant, realistic, expensive, technicolour, psyco-conditioning, Brain draining, meticulous, failure-accepting, improvement-demanding, Training. Confidentiality. Having the press blaring out every success, and harping on every failure, is not good for morale. (Irish Rangers never say they're a ranger. They always say that they're in their former unit.) And finally: Interoperability. A spec op unit has to be able to communicate and work with every unit in the regular forces. There is no point in having a Spec ops, if they cannot 'embed' into a infantry battlegroup to amplify the damage, or to have the infantry around to trake advantage of their operations. (example) I suppose this leads into the area of what are the roles of spec ops: As razor tips for a spearhead, sabotaging and a securing high value targets before the regulars arrive, or as independant strategic assets, doing tasks where a regular unit simply cannot go.

I don't wanna bitch about "which one is best" but don't forget that from the last NATO join exercise (Dynamic Mix-02 ) if i remember correctly spain green berets were considered the best spec ops forces "in-game". That doesn't make them the best... but they are high quality too (just USA, UK and France have had that reward)
