Alot people might look at that and say "Wow, what are they doing??", especially with the segways. But they are definitely thinking outside the box. Never seen a van like that, very cool. The only drawback to that is obviously it's lack of armor and effective cover/concealment for the dudes on top, but it might make up for it in mobility. Pretty bad-ass stuff. Any idea what unit that is?

Im surprised China was allowed to buy the "Segways"  Lets just say the gyros and software which alow them to balance have significant military potential with regards to guidance and nav systems!!!

I'd be surprised if they have legally bought them.  they're the worst offenders of IP and PO breaches.
what I find more irritating is the number of systems that the west have sold to china though under the aegis of anti-terrorism technology for the olympics.  it's criminal in my view.

GOP.  re the troops, they're "specials" created for the olympics.  they've been recruited from existing Dadu units.

Oh, makes sense. I wish I knew more about them. They appear to be a pretty professional bunch.

Firing from a segway, how accurate would that be?

I don't pretend to know what they're thinking with the Segways . . .
On the assault van, that's a pretty nicely done example of the genre, but it's not a Chinese invention.  They're used by various people for deliberate assaults and counter-terrorism type missions, and have been modified and tweaked a bunch of different ways by different users.  It wouldn't surprise me if GSG-9 or the SAS dreamed them up way back in the day, but may be wrong on that.

Yeah, Im not sure what they are thinking on the segways either. I guess maybe a more stable shooting platform on the move, possible more speed over an extended period, heart rate stays allowing for more accuracy, etc? Not really sure. But I'm sure theres a legit reason behind it?
Yeah, good point about the vans. I had never seen those before, but I wouldnt doubt if the GSG-9 came up with that either. Now that I look at it, it seems very LEO "SWAT-ish" really.

Australian SAS and the NSW Police were using modified F-100's in the 80's that looked just like these.  The Israelis have as well, and a casual look at the current kit that the Jordanian CTU's use will show similar configured vehicles.

They've just copied others.

Seems I was way off base then. Well if it works, then I guess there is no problem using it.
Whats your opinion on the Segways? I have never seen that before. And has that been tested by any other units?

Not to take any shots at the Chinese (seriously, much respect for them) or start a MP.net flame war, but they are pretty adept at reverse-engineering technology and creating copies.  I would bet that the Segways are in-house Chinese built clones based on a a few they got off the commercial market.  They do already have missile technology, so I doubt gyros, etc. would be a huge deal as far as export restrictions go.  If it was the DPRK it might be another story.

As for why they are using them, no clue.  It could be what they are giving their patrol officers to decrease wear and tear during 8-12 hour shifts, so they are practicing firing from them.  Seems unlikely though as that looks like a response unit and not a patrol one.  Its might be easier if we had any clue of their top speed, they might be quicker than your garden-variety Segway.

As a semi-serious answer, maybe they are trying to confuse the bad guys into thinking they are just rent-a-cops? I've seen way more security guards riding around on them then I ever have real cops. I know some departments have them, but...
