im pretty new on this so,i just thought i'd start with this.I think that the air troop propably has the more dodgy job within the regiment(although mountain troop can be quite dangerous)because when they insert via HAHO they usually end up seperated and have to meet at a rendevouz point pre-arranged then carry on with the mission.

every troop has a considerable work load. having to rendevouz after a haho landing isn't tough. a man ustilises simple map/compass skills to arrive at a pre-arranged point within a pre-arranged time slot. the only thing worrying to initial troopers in airtroop is whether or not they'll become strawberry jam on the runway, once you get a lot of jumps in, the nerves disappear. as i said before, the different troops are only a means by which to conduct oppos. at the end of the day, all troops carry out similar tasks with similar degrees of danger.

Yes, officers do a 3 year tour, intially as a troop commander, he can then come back for subsequent ones as Squadron commander, some have been troop commanders or SQN commanders more then once, then he maybe selected later on in his career for CO of the SAS and then again later on as DSF, SBS officers are similar except they can not become DSF only the Deputy DSF, how the SRR the "3rd" SF unit affects all this has yet to be figured out

tis true (i'm not sure what the time limit is today) but there are ways to 'bypass' that rule, i have known a couple of decent ruperts invited to serve another term. the main thing is that the regiment doesn't want to be seen stealing other regiments hard earned officers, thus their terms aren't the same as NCOs. it's easier to find replacements for good NCOs than it is officers just because of numbers.

Indeed, many a decent ossifer would have liked to have done more then 3 years, it probably goes by fast for them, selection training service gone and alot of them can never really fit into regiments they go to, it's not too bad in the Paras elite fast moving ect, but I can only imagine the tedium of a Guards regiment or whatever after a tour with the Hooligans, no wonder so many of them leave service if they don't get called back for OC of a SQN

Yes, NCO's run SF units, officers are there to sign the paperwork, many men have done 15-20+ years in the SAS, very rewarding times in service, now thats not to say by a long shot that the soldiers in regular units are not good, many men who would have been fantastic SF soldiers never went for it, it was just not their thing
