Thanks for posting the mention of the Canadians in Croatia in 93, I googled it and found it a good read. I have heard of this Somalia occurance, but I don't know what happened with the Canadian para's... could someone elaborate or post a reliable link?
I understand some Canadians are still para's though, a company attached to another unit perhaps? When I was in Azerbaijan there were Canadian paras there.
let's just say the CAR are no more, Ehran can likely fill you in much better than i, however, there was some sort of incident regarding the 'ill treatment' of a somali teenager. safe to say he ended up dead and a couple of CAR lads had 'blood' on their hands, the inquiry into the occurence led to beliefs that something was amiss higher up in the chain of command and that the blame was not just to be restricted to the lowest level party. the inquiry took quite a while i think and the end result was the dnd getting a slap on the wrist (that's how high up they decided it went) the CAR being disbanded and a number of higher uppers getting a smack bum. you should be able to dig up something on the net, i know my son did quite the write up for a high school essay and apparently did quite a good job, but that's him not me, he's too busy in uni right now for me to ask him, however, i am more than positive ehran will be able to explain the situation better than me.

the canadians sent troops from the airbourne reg't to somalia as peacekeepers. the place was the usual hole with a bunch of goons warlording about. the camp had a problem with somali's breaching the wire and making off with anything not nailed down. the CO ordered that to stop and some of the troops decided to make an example of the next somali they caught. like morons they documented what they did to the poor kid who wound up dying from being abused. the pictures got out and the public went apeshit and the pols went into full on cya mode. rather than rooting out the problems and sending some people off to make gravel in edmonton they dissolved the reg't. the reg't was due a housecleaning overall because i understand the other btn's had been dumping discipline cases and undesireables there in the theory it will "fix" them or drive them out of the forces. it was a very poor choice and obviously so even at the time imho.
each of the infantry reg't has a para qualified company now to retain the capability.

thanks for the added insight ehran, another question of you though... wasn't that Bass fellow (i believe he tried to rob a bank in edmonton or somewhere) a former CAR? i vaguely remember something in the news about him being turned down by the jaytees.

Thanks for the explanation Ehran.
Obviously an awful incident.... however disbanding a regiment because a thief got a kicking which went too far is rather extreme.

he was military but i don't know what unit he was from.
did you hear about that merry little band of rangers active duty no less who robbed a bank in washington state. seems ranger training isn't as helpful for that sort of thing as one would think as they were all rounded up in short order. the one prat the ringleader i think was actually arrested in bc at his mothers home.
guess hehe that it's true military skillsets don't transfer well to civilian life.

yimmy what they did to that poor kid went well beyond a good round kicking about and heads should have rolled all the way up the chain over it but trashing the reg't was too much.
