I was there! My name is Alberto Ortiz. I screwed up my knee there! I was with A co and B co from 76-79. Anyone can reach me at [email protected]. Lot of 509th sites don't mention 1/509th in Italy under SETAF in their History section. It's like we were still assigned to the 8 Inf Div.

I just thought of the other medic who served with us in the early to mid eighties in the 509th & 4/325th alongside Doc Dano.  The other one was Amato, I think he was from NY or somewhere up around there - had a rather abrasive, difficult to get along with demeanor but he was a decent medic.

Wow, just found this site. Brings back some memories. Any one remember Sgt. Jimmy Mayo? Was his RTO way back when. Sgt. Greek, yes I sadly remenber the Sardinia jump. Some good guys got screwed up. Any one remember the SKIING AVALANCE TRIP IN THE ALPS?  REALLY GOOD MEMORIES AND TIMES. The best group of men I ever worked with. Bob Johnson, living large in paradise.

I was there for both of them. I messed up my left knee in Sardinia and had to take a number two in the middle of the blizzard! Our tent fell down on us. We fail to dig all the way down to the ground level and only stomped the snow down. I was in Bco, mortars. LTC Murphy was our Bn Commander at the time.

Are you referring to Steven R "Smoke'm" Slocum that was COHORT (Alpha Company's) 1SG when Nuke'm Needham was Battalion Commander?  He was there prior to '82? I didn't know that. Are you sure about that? "Mayo" rings a bell for me as well - I don't know why, other than I am sure it has nothing to do with the movies and that Debra Winger thing, which was also about then I suppose - 1982.
