Subject: Is there really a need for Pararescue?
dirtykraut    7/11/2007 2:00:12 PM
Now before you all crucify me, I'm just going to say that I respect USAF pararescue just as much, if not more so than other SOF organizations. But it seems to me that there really is no need to have 350 CSAR specialists in the event they must rescue a pilot. Also, aren't other units tasked with CSAR? Could they not do the job at least adequately enough that in the event a plane went down behind enemy lines, any SOF or even conventional unit could perform such an operation? It just doesn't seem like these guys get to do their jobs very often, and in peacetime, there is absolutely nothing for them to do. What do you guys think?

Well to start off I would like to address the peacetime part which is the easy part to answer. In actuality PJs get used in peacetime probably more than any other sof asset save delta or other super clandestine group you don't hear much about. The reason for this is pararescue has rescue abilities that no other dod asset has. For instance, deep ocean rescue, the coast guard has limited to no refueling capabilities and their reach is limited to the coast. Pararescue gets a few deep ocean rescues every so often ( see movie perfect storm). Pararescue also has mountain technical rescue capabilities and is frequently called to do stateside rescues. The Alaska team in fact does daily rescues especially during climbing season. On top of this in peacetime if a drone or plane crashes overseas pararescue is the only fully capable dod asset to do any sort of technical rescue/recovery sort of mission. So in peace time pararescue is probably needed more than other sof units. Now in war time I would tend to agree with this post, for at least the present wars. If we were fighting a war with increased surface to sir risk that would change. The thing is the pilots want a dedicated scar asset. The pilots run the AF and again they want a dedicated csar asset. The AF also wants fast recovery of assets so instead of launching a PJ team 100's of km away from the incident they would rather often launch a random army infantry unit at a fob a few clicks away from the incident. Hence, yes, not much need for dedicated csar in current conflict. Pj's are often used to augment other teams (seal, ranger, sf...). Which is great, from a pj's perspective, opportunities to do this however are very limited. Pilots and the AF are reluctant to let PJs free in this way due to their desire to hold on to that dedicated CSAR team like a shiny penny stowed away in a pocket. PJs have been increasingly used in medivac role in these wars and has done a great job with this especially in high risk scenarios however I feel this is a poor choice to pursue. Pjs can do this role well but the operators are not happy with it and capabilities are grossly under utilized. The best scenario in my opinion is increased integration into other units 1 pj on an sf team for instance. This provides rescue capabilities to the sf team, another American gun, and csar capabilities to that team.

No. Pararescue is a csar force not a high risk medevac force. The utilization of pararescue has recently expanded to medevac. This is likely temporary, in my opinion a poor choice and poor utilization, but pararescue is NOT primarily medevac it is a primary combat rescue force.

flexhead    Need for pararescue??????   6/16/2014 3:28:27 AM
PJ's are involved in more than anyone that never been one could imagine!  Who were the ones that went in to hep out our civilias when the California highways collapsed we deemed to be unafe. (So of other may live) I personally was busy with training and helping out local governme. When hurricane Andrews hit who was left at homestead? ??? I also remember acts of a rescue swimmer, along with meny of my fellow PJ's. We did and do more than you non PJ's could understand.  The difference between us and them we dont need to be recognized.  We do it for the people who are in a position needing help / assistance!  You won't find out to much about what we do or have did because it doesn't matter, as long as it gets done! P.S. who do the other special force units call when they need 911????? PJ's and for some or the previously posted its not PR. Kinda show how much you know what you writing about.
Sincerely,
Disabled blown apart PJ
