Subject: CT unit or SOF ?
bravoss    3/29/2007 3:24:57 PM
After finishing the studies I thought about joing a police ct unit or joing the military and later trying to get to SOF unit. what is more challenging, and what are your advices on which one should i go for? the plus of the police might be that i won't travel alot and probably the i'll have a bigger paycheck, altough its not really crucial for me.

Ok, DEVGRU's out, red nomad it is, just to keep GOP happy
BTW GOP, SEAL's call it the group, DEVGRU is an actual name used, ST6 is not used anymore......sorry
Yes, yes, DEVGRU is out. Why would they drop ST6 in favor of something as retarded as "DEVGRU"? "The group" reminds me too much of that cheesy TV show "The Unit", so that is out as well. You know any old code names for their unit, that isn't used anymore (I certainly don't want any violations of OPSEC)? Hmm...I may just have to bite the bullet and call them "The Group", it's catchy (ala "The Teams"), but isn't without downsides. So as of right now, they are "The Group" or "ST6". Any who violates the name rule will be dealt with by Mough, and I'd be afraid. I wouldn't want a SOF operator on my a**.

I like "the unit".... ,who doesn't like Dennis Hasbert I ask ya?...they have had numerous code names, red nomad was years ago, and that was just for a training exercise, some Army jokers tried to get them tagged as "blue princess" once, but that didn't fly,  as for me, I'm mostly harmless....

BTW, the term "operator" is one of my pet peeves, it really should only be a D force thing, but now they call everyone it....sanitation operator.....

I was going to contribute to this thread, but I'm a little too irritated and sleep deprived.  I just hope to God that if terrorists attack a target somewhere in this country that ST6, DEVGRU, CAG, HRT, or whatever the hell else they call those "Tier One" teams arrive on the scene before I have to do something with my apparently subpar, less than "Tier One" skills and get somebody hurt.  Given the size of this country and the laws regard the military use in law enforcement matters, I'm sure the military and military CT teams should be on these scene within a day or so.  Just enough time to load the victims into body bags.

Smitty, yet again you take my post way out of context. I never said you or your team was subpar as I have never seen you operate (oops, Mough hates that...I mean "work"), but I do however believe that HRT are absolutely top notch. OK, heres the deal. Would I want my local PD SWAT team (who trains about 8 hours a month) to take down a serious hostage issue? No way. In fact, when there was a prison riot in the late 80's or early 90's (forget exactly when) about 10 minutes from where I currently live, who did the local PD call? FBI HRT...and HRT did a magnificent job. Our 8 hour a month SWAT/ESU/whatever the f*ck it is team would have botched that most likely, because the prisoners (latin immigrants who didn't want to be sent back home) were armed and holding cops hostage. Now, the full time big city teams are very good, but I still believe that HRT is what you could consider a Tier 1 force. Why? Because they have the complete package. Not only are they top notch at door kicking, but they also can rappell, operate in cold weather enviroments, climb, perform VBSS, operate in mountain enviroments, etc etc that most units just can't do. HRT is almost interchangeable with CAG (or used to be, they have changed their tactics more nowadays toward LE ROE's, which they should have back). Obviously their is no real Law Enforcement version of "The Group" (), as their is no real need to have guys capable of combat swimming/OTB/etc etc.
Smitty, don't think I'm putting you or your guys down either... I respect the heck out of you guys on SWAT. I don't want to turn this into another one of my medical threads or whatever (as I usually do somehow, lol), so no responses to this outside of Smitty please, but I've decided to be a police officer. I'm 100% committed to succeeding in that field and making it into a SWAT/ESU/SRT/BRT/HRT/whatever unit (I obviously have an extremely long road ahead of me and I will have to prove myself every step of the way). So you are doing the job that I hope to be able to do one day. So I respect the heck out of you and your team. I just think that HRT are absolutely top notch in that field. Don't take that as me saying you aren't tier 1, but being tier 1 takes a much larger skill set than just door kicking (and I'm not saying that is all you guys do either).

Dennis Hasbert is cool, but the show to me is freakin' fake as heck. Red Nomad? It's officially Red Nomad and the Group. Red Nomad is pretty cool if you ask me. Ahh Mough, we all know you are a super ninja SOF guy (have you mastered Ninjitsu yet?)...guys, watch out for those death stars if you ever meet up with Mough, as has been discussed in another thread all SOF dudes are ninjas (as quoted by a 15 year old SEAL groupie).
So what should we call them? How does SOF guys sound? Sort of off topic, but I think I have your unit pegged now Mough. So how is JTF2 treating you? (Hey, if you are watching the unit and aren't American, then you have to be Canadian).

We will never officially know how much CAG or ST6 operators are making, as they are officially denied by our government. I'd also say they are in the 100k range. It's glaringly obvious to me though that the CAG and ST6 types aren't in it for the money (the PMC's aren't getting many CAG/ST6 guys)...anyone who is willing to go through pure h*ll to get to that level isn't interested in making alot of money. That lifestyle ain't for everyone...if you are a family man type or want to earn alot of cash, then that business ain't for you in my opinion.
Sidenote - I can't stand the whole "DEVGRU" thing... they are SEAL Team 6 (or ST6). Calling ST6 "DEVGRU" is like calling CAG/SFOD-D "Boeing engineers"...it's generic and obviously bs. So let's drop the whole DEVGRU thing and keep ST6. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

The guys in JSOC make the same base pay as everyone else in the military in the same pay grade, plus most have been to just about all the schools that produce special duty pay.  It's still not boatloads of money, though, which is why CAG is very rank heavy and fast tracks guys to get them that rank.
The real change for Tier One and other SOF units has been the recent introduction of very large reenlistment bonuses designed to keep guys from going to PMCs.

If you look at the actual number of guys in CAG and ST6, then PMC attrition has been as issue for both groups, even though they are not the bulk of PMC contractors.  Those guys don't tend to be in it for the money (anyone who is made a major mistake by ever joining the US military -- at least until the boom in the PMC business), but that can change for less than greedy reasons when you've got a mortgage, two kids needing college tuition, alimony from your first marriage, etc. to deal with.

Yes the  UKSF(SAS&SBS) were given pay raises, also they could take 6 month active sabbaticals, as they called them, basically go off for a few motnths to work for  a PMC, make their money and come back and slot back into a squadron, no questions asked.

Hadn't heard about the second part of that, though it makes sense.  Last I'd heard from a friend who's TA over there (though not in a UKSF unit, so may have been wrong anyway) was that if you left to go contract, even from the reserve SAS units, you had to get your rucksack ready to go back through selection . . .

The operational and training parts of the show look to me like they've been deliberately scrubbed to remove just about anything that might remotely be an OPSEC issue, even before things get Hollywooded up.  Some of the base-life aspects of the show with the wives are a little more authentic feeling (though still a lot of that is Hollywood as well).

I currenty live in bosnia, after finishing my studies i am supposed to go to live in germany, because i have many family members there and that country has much more to offer. Anyway, it's the thing i was planning along time ago. Somebody mentioned the video games and hollywood, well i dont really play games alot and neither watch movies that are supposed to make your adrenaline pump and make you join the SOF. Just all in all when i think about what i would like to do there arent many things i could think of except SOF, police ct or maybe join the airforce. Ofcourse, chances that i'm going to finish the training and get the wanted job are pretty slim, but i'll probably have a back up plan. As someone said before its probably the best thing for me to continue studying hard, and when i finish my education make a decision. I  appreciate your effort in writing all those advices for me. Thanks.
