Subject: What do SARCs do?
colts    2/2/2007 6:32:24 PM
a good friend of mine has wanted to be a navy seal his whole life, anyway his eye sight is way to bad and they said he cant get a waiver for it (he is in Corpsman A school right now in illinios) they said he might be able to get SARC, and he asked me to find out all i can about it. Ive done some research but cant find much detailed info. What I found out was that they are Corpsman attached to Force Recon battalions, and they go through all the same schools as FR. Is this true? and is there more?

SCCOMarine,

about SARC, they are just Corpsman attached to FR, and Recon battalions right?

As far as what job I want in the Corps, I would absolutly love doing reconnaissance, I love the outdoors so anything that is putting me there is great, I know with the war, recon battalions are not doing their traditional jobs, I want Force Recon.  A battle engineer also really intrigues me though, I've always liked blowing shit up, and I absolutely love building things and working with my hands.  What do you think?
A SARC is a bit more than just a Corpsman, if there is such a thing as just anythimng in the military, A SARC goes through pretty much most of the same training as those in the unit he serves with.
Force Recon, currently transitioning to MARSOC does alot of things, no matter what anyone tells you, experienced and proven Marines are always going to get first shot there. It not going to be force recon anymore, there will be a Force recon Mos, but the CORPS is finally going to actively contribute to the SF community, Combat Engineering is a way exciting, and challenging MOS So is Artillery especially if you outstand yourself  and work your way into a units like ANGLICO. (Advanced NAVAL GUNFIRE LIASON COMPANY) which works with all branches of the service in 4-man + detachments who are on eof the few units in the Corps that are all jump qualified and who are inserted prior to action to spot for Naval AIR/Artillery and also do some limited recon themselves. BN Recon or Division recon that will be assuming more of the deep recon roles as FR transitions to MARSOC during amphibious operations. Tankers, LAR BNs man there is just a miriad of challenges out there.

There is nothing more challenging then commanding an infantry platoon in combat, 39 Grunts looking to you for decisions that may determne thier very survival, Everything in the Corps is a spoke on the wheel.

Bottom line is - prepare yourself the best that you can and take what opportunity you get to the fullest.

Lastly, Entering the Corps as an Officer, also has huge ramifiations for what you do when your career winds down, an officer has huge opportunities in the business world when they retire.

I think that you sound like you want to be more hands on.  That sounds like enlisting but the reconnaissance field is a hard road to travel.  And Force which is now MSOC is both long and hard.
This is the thing, you first have to know that you want to be a Marine.  If thats the case another thing that you might not understand now but you will if you join is what BadNews was hinting to.  That is the "The Needs of the Corps out way the Individual".  That means that as good as you may be in everything that'll make you a good recon canidate you may never get the chance to try out.

There are a lot of factors behind that and I can explain them in detail if you want.  But thats the main reason behind me asking you to be sure that you want to be a Marine b/c at the end of your service thats what your stripped down to, the fact that we equally ain't sh*t, and its a good thing.
Now If you enlist you have to pick an initial job.  If you want FR than I would suggest going infantry.  Its a HARD life but worth it if FR is your goal.  LEADERSHIP, TACTICS, GOOD TRAINING, those are all open.  And Distributed Ops training coming its going to be a really good field.  But Combat Engineer is cool too?

Pick one and I can give you more info on either.

Colt, then I must say your Dad is a wise Man:) Seriously, if you want to be a leader in the military, you will find yourself being a Dad for several young highly spirirted men and women, Whether Officer or NCO, you will soon learn that they will ALWAYS be looking to you for the answers.

Hey thats crazy that you were going to go Interrogator, b/c I was going thru the Counter Intel screening when my unit got Deployment orders to Iraq.  But I got to work with a HET at Camp TQ(Al Taqadum) in between Fallujah and Ramadi?  It was a cool job I find myself in a position similar to Colt where I question whether I want to finish my degree or come back in for CI.  I also found out the there is a reserve CI unit about 2hrs away but I would have to join the unit.  The problem is a plan to attend Temple Univ. Japan in the Fall so I won’t be able to drill.

But nothings perfect.

At the time, Late 70's HET was a future concept, there was 2nd CIT and 2nd ITU, G2 Ops all under the Hq Co Hq BN. There was no MI BN, was a different world. What you guys were working with in Iraq, was result of what transitions occurred in the 80's and from analysis of GW1

Yeah I was just recently reading how new it was for CI and I/I to be working together in one team called a HET.  I have the article somewhere I can send it to you if you want?

Since the MEU(SOC) program in the late eighties they've been doing some real high speed stuff.  Their getting ready to expand big time b/c every body wants them.  Their in heavy request by US Army unit in both Iraq and Afgh. SOCOM and the DEA down in Colombia.

Its killing me not to be doing anything, but I feel like I should finish up now and then re-evaluate when its all said and done. That way I'll have more perspective.
