Subject: I have questions about Force Recon, and the Corps, can anyone help?
colts    1/8/2007 12:18:56 PM
There are an abundance of posts on Seals, SAS, Rangers, etc., even Holywood focuses on Seals and Rangers, I am curious, why do I not hear nearly as much about FR? Are their missions to high profile? Or do they not do much? I would like to think that they just dont talk about their because its classified or something similar. Personally I believe that if in that line of business, and when I get their myself I am not going to kiss and tell, thats not why people serve, and if it is they are doing it for the wrong reason. Can anyone help me out? What type of ops do FR do? Can you name specifics for me? One more question, what is MSPF, MSOC, and MARSOC? Are these all SOCOM units the Corps has? Thank you

FR are very low profile in what they do, that and the fact most of their missions are to support Marine assets, means they don't get to do too many HSLD cool guy mission sets, like the SEAL's do.....they are exactly as their name implies, reconnaissance focused, yes they do other things, but that is their speciality, FR do all sorts of mostly greenside missions, GOPLAT, LRRP, DA missions ect, they do not do SMU type things, no aircraft takedowns, or the like....I won't get specific for you sorry but thats a no no, I believe MSPF, is the now larger unit, encompassing other Marine units that FR operates inside to support the MEU's, it is not part of SOCCOM, MARSOC was the old name for MSOC, which is in SOCCOM, they will be doing more SEAL type missions as part of SOCCOM, but they will not, as some people think, be the 3rd SMU.

I love acronyms

Mough,
Thanks but again, I am a rookie so if you could tell me what GOPLAT, LRRP, and SMU are that would be great.  I figure HSLD, is household, right? and DA is direct action, thanks a million.  And how would I go about becoming MSOC?

To be MSOC, you have to be in FR first, then be selected for Det1 or their new unit (whatever that may be).
