Subject: US Army Rangers or Green Berets
GOP    8/1/2005 1:52:37 PM
Although the Rangers are considered a SOF group, they are basically highly trained light infantry (some consider them the best light infantry in the world). Green Berets are considered a more elite and more highly trained group, designed for DA, SR, and the training of foreign militaries/insurgent groups. I have two questions: 1) The US Army Rangers have, from what I have read, tougher training then the Green Berets. Is this true, and if so, how are the Green Berets more elite? 2) If your goal is to be in Delta force, which of the two organizations would be the better choice to get to Delta? The Rangers work with Delta force alot as a blocking/security force, and the Green Berets are more of a classical special ops group.

Gop there is no preset path to Delta.I know a guy that made it from 10th Mtn.What you want to do is build your skills to get there.A Ranger Bn is going to get you a lot more training to hone your Infantry skills.SF Groups are going to open a lot of technical schools and training that are harder to come by in Bn.In Bn we referred to SF groups as the retirement program because a lot of Rangers would progress on to SF as a carrer choice.Coming of the street the 82nd would be what I would recommend it would give you an oppurtunity to develop and would put you at Bragg.Getting to Delta is going to take time and hard work and there is no better, shorter or easy path.

Sorry, 10th Mountain Division (Light) is a US Army unit currently stationed at Ft. Drum, NY. Hope that doesn't cramp your plan too much.

On the Air Force side, I would recommend Combat Weather. The only 1st SFOD-D guys I knew who were USAF were either CCT or Pararescue. The majority of those guys that I know started off in Combat Weather.

My bad, I thought the 10th mountain was a Marine division. That sucks, I really love the USMC. What is combat weather?

combat weather is an airforce organization of meterologists. That may sound a little hokie, but there are those whose job is to send back realtime light and weather data for combat operations. They are all on jump status so they form an unofficial pool for CCT and PJ's. you can enlist for both CCT and Pararescue, but it's only a guarantee to be sent to training. If you bolo you are at the mercy of the USAF as far as specialty and assignment. By going Combat Weather, you have a place to go back to if you don't make it the first time.

Gop the Military is only 10% excitement high speed balls in your throat exhileration.90% is hard work and mundane tasks in any Service. The most important trait you can have is perserverence. If you do the hard work and set your mine to it you will succeed.SEALS Forrce Recon Ranger SF weed the the mentaly weak out first.Special OP community is as diverse as the rest of the services. What they all have in common is the fortiude to excell in there feilds and perservere thru the 90% to get them where they want to be.Anything worth having does not come easy and that is what makes it special.

I realize that the military/SOF is not all about jumping out of airplanes, popping out of subs, and performing a simunition room takedown, but I also think if you love your country like I do, and excel at hard work, your work will not only be 'fun' but you will also have a great deal of satisfaction in what you have accomplished. I have 'inherited' or been taught/forced to have a very good work ethic by my dad. He's a workaholic and a perfectionist, so I have been forced to work hard and do things the right way, or risk having to do it over again. As far as being mentally tough, I don't have any problems. This may sound silly/hokie, but I would be the guy at BUD/S/ RIP/ whatever who wanted it more than anyone else would. I've always wanted to be in the military, and am very patriotic, so it seems to be a good fit. I am also confident (not y, but confident) and I have faith in my abilities.

How soon are you thinking about making this career choice, would you go enlisted or commissioned? Also what are your parents views given the current world situation? My little bro joined the RoyaL Marines and it did not go down well with the folks. Not out of any anti war sentiment, just concern for their child.

GOP it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulder and you should be good to go.I just wanted to you to know it is more about you and not the path you choose. You can get what ever you want if you put your mind to it.
