The thread that never dies!  Just when I though things had cooled down too.

I think the story he is referring to is from the book "Lone Survivor" by Marcus Luttrell.  I got it for Christmas and was looking forward to reading it but my pesky professors seem to have some other reading in mind for me to finish first.  Maybe this summer.  Looks interesting anyway, if you get a chance to read it Bob let me know what you think.

well, I apologize if I am stirring this issue up again. Regardless,  reading down the list of comments got me heated so I wanted to throw in my two cents about the Navy SEALs. I did say I dont see how anyone could be better than them, but that dosnt mean I dont think other units are on the same ballfield. I only talked about the Navy SEALs, I did not mention them being superior to another unit. And yes I was referring to Marcus Luttrells novel and if you havnt read it and you like Navy SEALs, its a really good read. Not a boring page in the book.

Navy SEALS  train every bit as hard as SAS or harder SEAL stands for sea ,air, land they train for every climate and terrain and I might ad that includes the arctic.Green Berets,Along with Seals and Recon Rangers were the Original SPECIAL FORCES  and RECON MARINES who were actually older than the SEALS and  did not like too train with the SEALS shortly after they,re founding because they did,nt agree with they,re training methods.SAS also trains for all terrains including Oceanic Operations though they were the first too take out terrorists in ninja fashion in an urban setting on international tv in awe inspiring fashion GSG9  are some deady TEUTONIC commandos also and cant leave out HA MOSSAD EITHER

Wow, and there we have it gentlemen.  The definitive and hopefully closing argument to what has been a most intellectually stimulating thread.  The SAS are NINJA's!!!!!!!

you have a pool of smart skilled and highly motivated guys with a set of tasks to prepare for.  it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the training for those tasks winds up looking similar especially given the frequent cross training with and observation of other units in similar lines of work.

Kimber can I just say this, you made a statement about how long it takes to work up a SEAL, which is true, you get badged in the SAS/SBS in 6 months after selection, but the difference is, that most SAS guys come from the Paras already an elite trained in land warfare, most of the rest are infantry |(Brit inf so better then most, and the odd others, RM, RAF regiment ect), the SBS is manned by the vast majority by RM's, already an elite trained in land warfare and amphibious and harsh climate, most SEAL's are either guys fresh out of recruit training or guys coming off of ships, a large percentage of what they learn in that year is basic LW skills, theres a reason why there are 2 tiers of SEAL's, the regular SEAL teams and then guys who pass into DEVGRU who would be more along the line of what the SAS/SBS do

this is not a SEAL clubbing on my part just the way the  USN went about creating the SEALs.
