Subject: An apology to Braddock
Old Grunt    1/20/2006 3:09:04 PM
I never thought that it would happen but it has. I guess you really do have influence with the Department of Defense, or at least the Department of the Army. Just a few weeks ago you were lamenting that the oportunity for you to be a part of the Special Forces community was just not available and how you would jump at the chance if it became possible. I guess some of your influential friends here at the Pentagon heard you because just a few days later the Army raised the age limit for enlistment to 40 in order to accomodate your wish! You are now eligible to enlist as an 18X!! Man, you must be beside yourself with joy! When do you plan on going down to the recruiting station? I mean, you have the required GT score, experience and skills right? And with all the mentoring that you've gotten from "Green Berets" passing the screening tests should be a breeze for you! After all, the best way to influence the "Green Beret" community is to get assigned to USASOC headquarters and they only pull their staff from the operational community which, of course, you already knew. From there you can move to USSOCOM headquarters and have direct influence across the services. A man of your ability should be able to get assigned to the Pentagon staff after only three or four years of operational time. I wouldn't be surprised if you have already been down to the station! I mean, after all, you have assured us all time and again that you are a man of integrity and that you don't lie. And I know that you wouldn't be so superficial, selfish, and petty as to put the well being of yourself and your family above the welfare of the Nation who so desperately needs you. I would expect a lesser man to try and give some lame excuse for why he wasn't going to take advantage of the fantastic opportunity that he had been given, but not you!! I am so excited for you that you have finally been given your chance to show the world what you are really made of! Please keep us informed of your progress, I'm sure the other posters on this board will join me in congratulating you on receiving which you have so many times stated you wished you could get!

Sorry guys, didn't want to start a new thread (I have about 3 running, lol)... I am about to start doing some rucking, but I have a problem: No ruck, no boots, no fatigues. I am doing some 'training' for the military (either USMC Recon, Navy SEALs, USAF Special Tactics, Green Berets, Rangers, 82nd Airborne, USMC grunt, US Army Light infantry, or US Army 101st Airborne...just to give you an idea about how confused I am right now...although my philosphy is to start out a regular grunt if I am unsure), and I am looking at the following: Alice Pack (supposedly a goo value from what I have read) Altama boots (issued to SEALs in Iraq, for what it's worth, I am willing to pay much more for a very good pair of boots) Digital Desert Camo (well, I have always wanted a pair of these) What would you change from this list (well, the boots and pack)? Also, what is the best way to get the weight up tp 45lbs in the pack? I obviously don't have any equipment to carry, but I want to start with 45lbs (at least) and I want the weight to be distributed properly. My Dad has told me to go to a outdoor sport store, he wants me to get a $350 (Gregory?) pack, and some $150 boots, and forget the fatigues ("They are a waste of money")...but I simply don't have $500, so is my list suffucient?

>>19. PEOPLE EITHER LOVE OR HATE THIS PERSON.<< I don't think that applies, because I certainly don't hate or love him. I respect him in a weird way (he never changes due to pressure)

GOP - I have all the respect in the world for you training. You have nobody wishing you success as much as me. But (and you knew that was coming)..... What is your 1 mile time in shorts and running shoes? (average time!) What is the longest run you have taken in the last 2 months in shorts and running shoes? And what was your time/mile. How many pushups can you do today? How many situps can you do today? Only reason for all the questions is so I can give you an informed opinion.....

Sorry I left out the most obvious question. Age? Height? Weight? Can you swim?

1. Get a large ALICE pack. While the MOLLE is the standard Army/Marine issue, all the recon and snipers still used the ALICE. I couldn't tell you what SOF prefers, but if anything, it will be more comfortable, and it's better to use what will be the SFAS standard and learn to deal with the suck factor of the ALICE (it places a lot of weight on your lower back). 2. Also, a good pair of boots is a good idea - get desert tan since that's the Army standard and is currently the most popular boots in our operational areas. 3. I wouldn't buy any cammies. Most ruck training is done in PTs and boots. 4. Buy a camelbak to strap to the top of the ruck. It's the standard hydration system. 5. Buy a bunch of 32 & 64 oz Gatorade bottles to add weight to your pack. Once you've drank them, replace them with water to keep the weight. By using these bottles, you've always got extra water on hand, and it fills the pack out, unlike weight plates. You'll want the pack filled out like a true load, because it will help you to fit the rucksack. Last thing you want is to have the ruck shift around a bit on you because it was fitted for a tight, weight plate load, rather than a realistic, fuller load.

EW3, your back! :) My 1mile run time is about 8:00...but I haven't done much long distance stuff because I was on a powerlifting routine (I was being pressured to compete by my Youth director) and I have heard of people's squat coming down because of the high impact (I was doing 12 miles on the bike in 37 minutes with some resistance, fwiw). My pushups are very weak, only 42 in 2 minutes. I was benching 250lbs, though. I can do 60 situps in 2 minutes. Age: 15 (16 in early March) Height; 6-1" Weight: 205lbs Swim: absolutely. I have grown up on a lake and near the beach w/a pool (two houses) and I am big into alot of watersports. Now, I have gotten on a good training program that has some hardcore pt (I am not quite in the "Navy SEAL workout" shape yet) and some great cardio (I am preparing for a 5k, and planning on doing some rucking...but Mough said that rucking was a bad idea...thoughts?). I will be glad to type my training program if you would like (and I would love for you to critique so I could get the most out of it)

Along with rucking for the sole purpose of getting ready for the USMC/whatever, I am also getting ready for a pretty tough (well, it is supposedly the toughest trails in the Smokey mountains, whatever that means) 11+ mile hike that my Dad wants to take me on that he went on as a teenager (well, he was 19) with some of his buddies...so I am also trying to prepare for that (I was supposed to 2 months ago, note the 10th Mountain post on the infantry forum). I doubt we will be able to finish it, one of my friends is going and he isn't all that prepared (he is a phenomenol baseball player, but not all that strong or in great cardio shape).
