Subject: nuclear detection equipment a placebo not a true solution?
HYPOCENTER    1/11/2007 3:57:37 PM
We have nuclear detection equipment to scan containers at ports.... and other shipments. I'm sure we have passive sensors at airports as well as other places.

What I don't get, and what I hope someone can explain to me here is this: aren't these detection methods nearly useless? Because wouldn't anyone transporting nuclear material want to have it shielded in some sort of container? Such as a lead box? Thus making it undetectable to sensors of any kind.

Are these detection devices really providing any protection at all if they can be beaten with simple shielding?
