Subject: disguising as security forces
Crass Spektakel    12/15/2006 4:41:21 AM
I am reading over and over again about criminals or terrorists disguising themselves as security forces for their operations. This tactics seems to prove fatal for moral of the population and regular armed forces.

Why is there so little discussion about countermeasures?

The root of the problem is that you usually have to confront someone face to face to check his identity and to do so you have to expose yourself to some extend.

With my experience in information security I would opt for an extended RFID-like radio-beacon becoming mandatory for regular armed forces. Those beacons are able to broadcast a encrypted validation code which can be checked from a distance with a small PDA-like device. Those Beacons contain very little technology and should therefore be very cheap to massproduce - Fitting several 100.000 vehicles with it should cost only some very low millions but make it mostly impossible for crocks to drive around disguised as security forces: If an army/police/ambulance/etcpp shows up without a beacon signal the grunts switch the gear to yellow alert.

This could be even extended to single personal on the ground.

Ok, there is always a chance that your beacon also alerts the enemy - even though he can not decrypt the data he may be able to scan for signals on the relevant frequencies. But then it is YOUR beacon so you can switch it off as desired and you can distribute lots of false beacons which can not be identified by the enemy.

All in all I can't understand why sausages from my local supermarket are protected by RFID but a 100 billion dollar army isn't
