I have been given the impression that chief factor in the divide between Europe and America is that America went down opposite forks in the world view road in the late eighteenth century.

I have read that even Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, who were among the biggest religious skeptics among the Founders, both advocated Bible teaching in schools. America was founded for the most part as a Bible believing country.

On the other hand Europe was greatly effected by the European Enlightenment which was so dramatically manifested in the French Revolution and later manifested in Darwinism, Marxism and Nazism.

There are some interesting side lights.

Many believe that the revocation of the Edict of Nantes which led to the dismantling of Bible believing Protestantism in France was the greatest single factor leading to the French Revolution because the Huguenaut Protestants had made such a great contribution to the French economy.

I have heard it said that Britain was headed for the kind of revolution France was going to have before the "Great Awakening". The "Great Awakening" began in America and spread to England where it resulted in the rise of Methodism. This religious revival is said to have headed off a revolution.
