>The issue of kneecapping gets down to one of preparedness. Bingo. The ADF goes through op tempo cycles throughout the year which have a major impact on preparedness. Another factor on preparedness is politics (at the moment the government has placed some MAJOR restrictions on what the ADF can do to protect its bases). Plus, as good as Aussie intel services are, we've got our blind spots and prejudices that they know and can play on in order to achieve strategic suprise.

I was involved with some Garrison Support Contracts that involved security at bases. Needless to say I am not a fan of outsourced security. Not meaning to be excessively harsh, but in this country, "Static Guards" are not members of the "A Team" It's the first thing I'd pull back to military control.

As daft as it may seem to us, the issue is that you need to look at all possible options. The assumption that an OPFOR will engage in predictable engagement patterns is the first mistake made, and effects all subsequent engagements. Every nation who watched the results of 9-11 has been able to sit back and realise that in a force on force engagement - those who respond asymetrically (and I use it in the broadest Sun Tzu sense) can carry the day.

i totally agree that young people in australia do not seem very patriotic. being a teenager im shocked when i see fellow teens vandalising rsl halls and acting like criminals. the facts is that not many would fight if asked to, i recall in school one day the teacher asked if conscripted to the military who would go. only 4 hands went up out of 30, even more shocking was when asked if they would join up if australia was invaded only 6 hands went up. not a good sign for the future. In responce to australia being uninvadeable that is not true, its just a undesireable place to invade.

I've been involved with the Service Cadets for years and seeing them does give me hope of our young. I've seen troubled, unsure 13 year olds become confident, patriotic 18 and 19 year old who, if they don't go on to join the ADF (many do) then become the kind of citizens that help make this country great.

>It's the first thing I'd pull back to military control. That was the first thing that we wanted to do but the Minister said no. Base security in Australia isn't a joke, it's damn near treason.

There's better bloody security at the Philip Morris Factory in Melb than DSTO at Salisbury. It's bloody scandalous. About the only place that's "guarded" is Russel, and that's mainly due to perimeter hardware. Outsourcing is a joke in a lot of areas. The older guys must roll over every time they visit a mess hall.

"im shocked when i see fellow teens vandalising rsl halls and acting like criminals" - dont confuse a handful of young ppl out of millions other that wouldn't even think of doing that. young ppl now days are alot different to previous generations, but this does not mean for the worse, sure there are some bad traits we may have but i can tell you there would be alot more young ppl join up if we were invaded than what you think, plus, your talking about school, most ppl in school are not even 18 and are not thinking about putting their life on the line for the country, there thinking about playing console games and getting pissed. push comes to shove, im sure alot would. ;)
