Subject: Puma IFV
DropBear    1/1/2005 4:44:36 AM
1. Is there a place for an equivalent to the Puma IFV in Oz Army?

2. Are there any options for upgrading the firepower of the ASLAV, in the way of a bigger cannon (not including TOW launchers/mortars etc)?

3. Has Euromissile Roland-SP SAM ever been considered for Oz?
Would a battery be useful in 1st Armoured Reg. (or elsewher)??

"1. Is there a place for an equivalent to the Puma IFV in Oz Army?" They look like a good vehicle, but the money spent on M113 upgrades rules them out until about 2020-2025. By then who knows what will be around. "2. Are there any options for upgrading the firepower of the ASLAV, in the way of a bigger cannon (not including TOW launchers/mortars etc)?" Bushmaster 2 (30mm/Supershot40) and 3 (35mm/Supershot50) have both been fitted to LAV turrets. A good option would be the gun on the Tiger, which fire the same ammo as Apache IIRC. "3. Has Euromissile Roland-SP SAM ever been considered for Oz? Would a battery be useful in 1st Armoured Reg. (or elsewher)?" Don't know if we have looked at it. 16 Air Defence Regt in Woodside would be the best home for it. There are much better systems out now days however.

Could you mount an aircraft revolver cannon like the BK 27. Most revolver cannons have a rate of fire of more than 1,500 rpm. With the right FCS you would have a fair bit of precision firepower available to an ASLAV. Things like excessive ammunition use have crossed my mind but I would like to see what you thought.

AE You may know this, Israel used the Vulcan Anti-Air vehicles as DFSV's in Leb. These vehicles are now upgraded with Stinger and improved FCS. The USMC are now receiving "Blazer" LAV's. 25mm cannon similar to the one on the Harrier and Stinger. My thoughts are a system with a cannon that uses in service ammo and Starstreak. Starstreak is the Anti-Air missile used by the Pomms, it has been tested on armour with devastating effect. The range is 8Km's and the vehicle could easily "swing" from punching clouds to shooting tanks, then suppressing Inf with 25mm.

I hadn't originally been thinking about it as an air-defence vehicle, but now that you mention it, it does sound like a good idea. I didn't know about that Blazer LAV, but after reading about it a bit it seems pretty good. I was thinking of using a single barrel cannon because they have greater accuracy rather than a gatling gun.

AE When you said revolver cannon I immediately thought gatling. With the high rates of fire I think multi barrels are better because they cool faster and the barrels don't wear as fast. Could you explain the action of the BK27?

While we're at it lets add a VLS system for EFOGM or similar, say eight missiles, in the small "troop commpartment". A turret with a M781 gun from the Tiger (improved lethality and range) and 2 to 4 Starstreak. A fire control system consisting of a radar and thermal sight, to engage both air and ground targets. Don't know how we would go for cost and wieght but what a system. :)

Yeah, that is a bit confusing. A revolver action is one with multiple chambers like a revolver pistol. It allows you to fire faster while keeping the stresses on the gun down so it won't explode. When one chamber is firing others are loading and extracting cases. This is as opposed to a linear action which has to load, fire, recoil and extract before it can fire again. They usually have 5 or 6 chambers. It's not anything new, most fighters with a single barrel cannon have a revolver cannon like the Tornado, Brit Harriers, Rafale, Eurofighter, Grippen. The advantage revolver cannons have is that they have a higher initial rate of fire because they don't need to spin up like a rotary cannon. They also are lighter and more compact. I think as an anti-aircraft weapon rotary cannon have the advantage, but for shooting other AFVs I think a revolver cannon would be better suited because of better accuracy and larger rounds (30mm ones are available that are around 100kgs). I think a 30mm Aden cannon would be good, seeing as how we are already using it on the Hawk and I think it uses the NATO 30mm like the tiger.
