So what are they calling the darker shade of grey in the photo you provided???

My understanding is that USN official markings are FS 36320 over FS 36375.

In the pic the darker shade ( FS 36320) comes down to BORT number 201 and the LErX.

I thought the F-111 was FS 36118 (414A53) Medium Gunship Grey.

Curious.

thats light grey.  the gumbys are dark grey

we're building the same as USN spec, so if they paint them pink for that run, then we get pink

I'm talking about frame colour - as in the main colour of the platform.

Well, I have just revisited my guide on Federal Standard 595 Paint Specs and I see that "Light Grey" is FS 36373. The USN info I have says that this is not listed for the SH or legacy Bugs alike.

Quite.

So am I. There are two shades to all legacy Hornets and Super Hornets, operated by all users.

I've also not seen the F-111 listed with "dark grey". Would be interested to see a source.

well, you don't have to do any gamma correction to see that the gumbys are a very different grey to the Shornet
we use light grey because it is a wavelength issue for the naked eye at "nn" (classified) thousand feet..

Could you then explain to this dummy why the "light grey" that you say we use, comes in two shades on the picture you provided? I still say that it is the EXACT colours from the US Federal Standard 595 Paint Scheme and that it is what the USN operates. I can't find any info on Bugs using light grey anywhere on the internet. I spent several hours last night trolling around to no avail. I still come up with the two FS references in my earlier post. The picture you provided has two distinct shades of grey and not one single pallet. The reference guide I have (which can be bought commercially for $US158 says otherwise). I would hate to think I have wasted $AUD200 on said guide if it is fundamentalyy wrong in what colours are applied to US and NATO standard aircraft.

are you being obtuse?

get a pic of a gumby and place it next to the happy snap at the start of this thread.

one will be light grey - the other is significantly darker.

ie the principle colour of the airframes/fuselage  is different, I'm not talking about the penanting or the racing stripes.

I assume that (like me) you have seen a gumby and a Shornet up close.  They are very different colours of grey.T he former is a whole lot darker.

They should have painted it red to increase it's Vmax.

On a serious note though I beleive there is some miss communication here based on a similar error to the one I initially made, that being that the SH in the pic has a two tone paint scheme like our current bugs. Having a closer look I can see it is a single shade of light grey without the dark grey uppers of our existing bugs.

I don't think these are getting DSTO's "signature" management "brew" as they're not being kept.
