The ADF has increased maximum entry age, loosened medical standards and increased rates of pay without much success in attracting the experienced technical people they are so short of.
My thought is that the problem is not the final pay rate at the completion of training that is the issue, as these rates are often quite competitive, but rather the rates while training. Imagine you are a professional, para professional, tradesman or other skilled worker with a decade of experience with a family and a mortgage, could you afford a 50% or greater pay cut for several months or even acouple of years?
My solution, when a suitable applicant joins the ADF they are paid the equivalent of their old civilian wage during training. How many of you would consider signing up if the pay cut wouldn't risk you defaulting on your mortgage? |
