Subject: Rudd the Conquerer
bigfella    4/21/2008 5:38:27 PM
Kevin Rudd cemented his position as Australia's greatest Prime Minister yesterday with a massive expansion of Australia's maritime boundaries.

Having charmed the world with his diplomatic & language skills, Kevin Rudd has reaped the rewards with an expansion of Australia's continental shelf by an area the size of France. The last time we managed anything this spectacular was Billy Hughes' successful grab of former German colonies at Versailles in 1919, and we had to give that back in the end.

Apparently DFAT is now drawing up plans for the peaceful annexation of New Zealand & Timor Leste. A spokesman said: 'We've already got the economically productive part of New Zealand's population and most of Timor Leste's resources, we might as well finish the job'.

"Australia extends rights over sea

Australia has increased its share of the seabed by 2.5 million sq km, after the UN agreed an extension.

Its continental shelf will be extended by five times the size of France, giving it rights to explore new areas for oil and gas.

Australia had worked for 15 years on the claim.

Some of the new areas lie beside Antarctic territories, but the resources minister said there would be no exploration of Antarctic waters.

Potential bonanza

"I am pleased to announce that Australia, the largest island in the world, has just been dramatically increased in size," said the resources minister, Martin Ferguson.

He said the new territory was 10 times the size of New Zealand and 20 times the size of the UK.

The minister said he could not put a figure on the potential oil and gas reserves contained in the areas.

"The truth of the matter is that they have been hardly explored," he said.

"This is potentially a bonanza. We have got unknown capacity up there."

Mr Ferguson said it was important that Australia got on with exploration, because it was not rich in oil.

Australia's continental shelf is being extended beyond the 200 nautical mile limit, in parts of the west, south and east, and also beside the Antarctic territories of Macquarie and Heard islands.

The claim was made under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea."

When is Paris getting the bad news about Rudd's plans for New Caledonia and the New Hebrides?

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story Brett.

I was taking my lead from the 'George Bush (snr) won the Cold War', 'John Howard is responsible for the economic boom' school of political comedy.

1) Fair point......(although Howard did at least 'right the budget' in the 97-99 period - before the boom really took off)

2) But what are you talking about in relation to George Bush Snr? Everyone knows it was Pope John Paul II who defeated communism and won the cold war!?!

Brett.

P.S as we are prevented from exploiting the extended boundaries surrounding our AAT by treaty two point become raised:

A) How much new area is of any actual use?  and

B) If any new territory was granted on the basis of the AAT claim by Aus, can it be argued that persuit of even a UN process to extend territory in that area violates the provisions of the Treaty?
