Subject: LHD-UAV
DropBear    4/3/2008 8:00:39 AM

The following theoretical CGI pic has an RAN LHD launching a UAV from the ski jump.

Question -

Does the RAN have some ideas/need for an organic RAN based UAV for OTH fleet targeting/surveillance?

I know this is just an animation and I am personally strongly against acquiring the F-35B STOVL for ADF service, however, what are the merits of using or having permanantly deployed RAN UAV from said ship?

Curious.

I think it almost a certainty that UAV's will operate off them at some point in the future. If not RAN owned assets than certainly Army assets.

A RAN/RAAF operated UCAV capability might be a possibility too given that RAN has previously indicated interest in a Firescout type TUAV capability. I imagine that anywhere up to 12 of those could be operated from a vessel the size of an LHD without significantly effecting the "transport" helo capability.

I wonder if, as`UCAVs are proven, we will see a new class of warship evolve; a sort of UCAV carrier.

This would be a smallish, stealthy, through deck design with EM cats and arrester gear operating nothing but UCAV's.

Maybe a partial ANZAC replacement from 2030?
