Subject: So much for the education revolution... possible CSIRO cuts
DropBear    3/30/2008 6:48:42 PM

It has been touted that upto 25% of frontline research may get cut and that a potential 1000-1500 scientists could lose their jobs/funding at the CSIRO.

Don't understand how the former Government could reduce funding to this once great organisation and now Rudder and the boys may do same asa well. Surely there has to be some things that can be left alone when considering balancing the national budget.

Time will tell.

I was hearing noises that the CSIRO was being run less like a profitable business (impossible given the restraints) and more like a productive centre of research with many outstanding spin off technologies. Im guessing different governments will make the same mistakes.

Has labour increase the R&D breaks back to pre lib levels.?

Seriously the tax cuts have to go before stuff like this.

unbelievable.  I had to deal with the CSIRO last year on some materials tech.  they were doing stuff for 1/50th the cost that the americans were doing - and which was being exported to the germans and was regarded as useful to solving some signature problems for the F-22 and JSF.

I can't believe that they want to travel this path.  They've probably decided (again) that we need to follow the UK (as Lab traditionally has this penchant for UK programs) and do a Qinetic (without the support base that DERA had!)

I am rapidly losing faith in their chance to make us a smarter country....

Yep , my next door neighbour is a CSIRO scientist - already talking about project cuts and trying to do to  much with to little. Quite a shame as the research they (she) is doing is world leading.
Sore about that one.

... because everybody in Australia will be able to benefit from Labors $4.7billion dollar broadband network that buisiness would have built anyway, which will improve our ability to keep track of all that scientific research that our scientists are doing overseas, between the faster porn downloads that is.

actually everyone won't. Labors broadband network won't go much beyond the major cities and a few larger towns.

god help the bush for internet access if they manage to kill the opel plan.
