Subject: Adverse effects of the Mining Boom
Kells11515    3/24/2008 11:43:20 PM
I don't know how much the mining boom is effecting the east coast but over here in WA its massive!!

I'm just wondering if anyone can see any adverse effects associated with the boom.

In WA house prices are astronomical. They are quickly becoming out of reach for many low to middle income earners to own and rents are tiped to exceed $400 a week within a few months.

According to the West Australian Newspaper there is a new underclass begining to emerge of middle income people and families who cant afford to feed themselves because thier rent or loan repayments take all thier money.

Essential services like Police, Nursing and Teaching are struggling as many workers are leaving these jobs to take up well paying mining jobs.

But what of the long term implications? When WA exhausts its mineral deposits what then? Traditionally WA has relied on Farming, Tourism and Minerals for its wealth. With most of the workforce now engaged in the mining game what will happen once it ends?? Will we have massive unemployment somewhat reminice of the depression??

Maybe I'm just a pessimist but there has to be a downside to the goodtimes!!!

I know house prices in places like Mackay/Moranbah have gone through the roof. My guess is that the same is happening in every mining town in Qld.

Biggest problem at the mo is congestion at places like Abbotts Point where mines such as Newlands and Collinsville feed to. Not enough rail capacity and port facilities to handle all the ore carriers standing off port.

If only Pinhead Beattie and Captain Bligh could have seen beyond their egos we would be in a better position to facilitate more efficient exports.
