Hijacker killed after taking Australians hostage in China

10 Australian tourists taken hostage in China have been released.

10 Australian tourists taken hostage in China have been released.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has confirmed that a hijacker took 10 Australian tourists hostage in China before police shot and killed him.

All the Australians are now safe, and are heading to Shanghai tonight where they will meet Australian Government officials.

A DFAT spokeswoman says the tourists were on a bus in the city of Xi'an in north-west China, when the man - reportedly carrying explosives - boarded the tourist bus.

Nine of the hostages were released but a 48-year-old woman from New South Wales was held.

The woman and her captor were transferred to a car and were heading to the airport when Chinese police then shot and killed the hostage taker close to a toll gate.

In statement Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said he was pleased the situation was resolved so quickly and the hostages were safe.

"Our Embassy in Beijing and our Consulate-General in Shanghai are providing consular assistance to the Australians affected by this incident,'' Mr Smith said.

Now you can see why violent resistance against commies won't work.

Wow, too bad the Oz embassy won't get to question this guy for motives.  Going to an airport rules out money, sounds like he was trying to get away from something (local authorities?).

That doesn't matter. He chose to act with violent revolve, so he took the consequence. The difference is that Western government will try to talk him into surrender, but commies always hit the kill button in the first place.
