Subject: Yamato movie clips
AMTP10F    9/30/2007 1:48:39 AM
I came across some film clips of the recent Japanese movie 'Yamato: the Last Battleship'. Very cool in a 'Saving Private Ryan' way. Can't wait to see it come out here (on DVD).

Delete everything in the address bar before the second "http" and hit enter. You should be taken through to youtube for some very good viewing.

Cheers.

DB, try cutting and pasting these (obviously leave out the parentheses):

Good luck, cheers.

I have been dying to see this movie for such a long time. Its Japanese name is "Otoko Tachi No Yamato", I have also seen it refered to as "The men of Yamato", "Yamato the last battle" as well as just simple "Yamato" .
I have been looking at some vids on YouTube ( link is a good example)and it looks awesome. It also has the same excellent actors in that stared in a favorite of mine "Letters from Iwo Jima" (yet for some reason I dislike its companion movie  "Flags of our fathers").

Yamato was released way back in 2005 in Japan and I was wondering has anybody seen this movie and dose anybody know where I can get it?

I saw this movie in Japan in 2005 - it actually isn't that good. The 'Saving Private Ryan' element is rather overhyped if you ask me, the gore is quite fake and unrealistic looking and the CGI is substandard. Even taking into Japanese language and mannerisms, it is overacted and unrealistic in the portrayal of the men and women of the time I thought.

A big controversy about the film at the time was whether it was a honest depiction of the horrors of war or a nationalist propaganda film. I personally lean towards the latter - it is a much hyped and over done story about a big ship that was functionally useless its entire career. Most modern Japanese live action movies aren't that good anyway (I am a Japanophile before anyone gets started)...

The imagery associated with this movie is cliched and a serious movie goer will think it is average at best. But, then again, this is my 2 yen. See it if you want and decide for yourself, but do not expect a good movie that will provide and new insight on the IJN, the Japanese people or the Mighty (but ultimately useless) Yamato.
