Subject: Military Decorations in Oz
bigfella    7/26/2006 4:34:14 AM
The recent sale of a WW1 VC got me thinking about military honours. Do we still award VCs, which were basically a British decoration? I know we did as late as Vietnam. Have we awarded one since then? If we have replaced the VC, what with? Just curious.

"Why stop there though? Maybe we could stop remembering ANZAC Day too and start celebrating "Republic Day" just because of the historical association with England!!!" Sums up your post well mate, takes something out of context and replace it with something completely irrelevant and exaggerated!

Maybe you should try reading it again then. 3/4's of it talks about my feelings on the VC, which correct me if I'm wrong is what this thread is all about isn't it? Your argument seems to be that we should replace the VC, simply because it relates directly to England. Well, I was merely proposing something else that relates directly to England be replaced as well. I thought YOU of all people would agree with me there.

FO, you still seem to be writing in English? Will you follow the cricket this season?

"FO, you still seem to be writing in English?" Huh?... "Will you follow the cricket this season?" Are you being sarcastic or...? If not then hell yeah, will be going to the boxing day test (MCC member) or working there (serving beer)... Being from Mildura I much prefer summer to winter...

Well Cricket is played in Australia as a direct result of our English colonial past. And english is the main language here for that same reason, oddly enough I know. Yes there was a hint of sarcasm there, but it worked to test just how well you thought out and/or meant the following statement... "Just one of still many steps we need to take to completely, and I mean 100% completely, breakaway from our one sided, biased history and embellish all that is Australian now!!" Completely to me means - stop communicating in the language - stop playing the sports, most natably cricket - remove and replace what is a very fine legal system - totally alter what is an excellent political system (whether under a GG/Monarchy or a President) - etc I could go on but I think I've made my point, for now.
