Australia Orders ITT's SINCGARS for Interoperability

(Source: ITT Industries, Inc.; issued Dec. 12, 2005)

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --- ITT Industries, Inc. has received a $4.6M order for several hundred of its newest SINCGARS systems from the Australian Ministry of Defense. Work will be performed by ITT's Aerospace/Communications division, headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN.

ITT developed SINCGARS with the U.S. Army, and has produced five generations of the combat net radios with a quarter-million in operation around the world. The newest generation SINCGARS combines data, voice and geo-location information into a seven and one-half pound package that can be placed in a rucksack or mounted in vehicles like tanks and personnel carriers. Australian SINCGARS will be used in Abrams tanks and configured for long-range operations. SINCGARS technology was purchased as part of on-going modernization and interoperability plans for the Australian armed forces.

Among the various SINCGARS features are the ESIP waveform that improves voice and data retransmission as well as digital signal processing of software upgrades for enhanced features and performance.

ITT Industries, Inc. supplies advanced technology products and services in key markets including: fluid and water management including water treatment; defense communication, opto-electronics, information technology and services; electronic interconnects and switches; and other specialty products. Headquartered in White Plains, NY, the company generated $6.8 billion in 2004 sales. In addition to the New York Stock Exchange, ITT Industries stock is traded on the Midwest, Pacific, Paris, London and Frankfurt exchanges.

Is this just for the tanks or is it meant to be Army wide?

Well it mentions that the radios are for the tanks, but then mentions that "hundreds" of radio's are being purchased. Seems strange that you'd need "hundreds" of radio's for 59 tanks... Normally they only have 2 each...

I initially thought this was an Army project, then an ADF wide goal to reduce radio types etc and have one integrated system. Is what I am naffing about a totally different project or perhaps a vivid dream I once had? ;)

Well, Army has a grand (titled) project called: the Battlespace Land communications project. It has the minor goal of completely re-equipping every army unit with a similar suite of radio's (man pack, vehicular, trunk etc) over the next 10 or so years, in a series of phases. 3rd Brigade is supposed to get the radio's first, followed by 1 Brigade, then the rest of Army will follow after that. However Tiger and now Abrams are being fitted with next-gen SINCGARS radio's, right now... These I understand are only able to communicate with our legacy Raven and Wagtail radios by switching off their digital encryption and frequency hopping capabilities!!! If the Government agrees with the rumoured Bradley IFV purchase for Army and cans the M113 upgrade, the Bradley's would HAVE to come with SINCGARS radio's too, simply to communicate effeectively with the Abrams's and Tigers. This would have the effect of significantly screwing up the timetable of the Army comms project, which is why I'm wondering if the decision has already been made to go with SINCGARS, Army wide? It would hardly make sense to choose SINCGARS for 2 0r 3 of the Army's major platforms now, and choose different radio's for the rest of army in 12 or 24 months time... On top of this, I'm not aware of an overall ADF comms project, but I've read Air Force and Navy also have similar projects. Whether they'll be the same brand of radio as Army or not I don't know, but I'd imagine (or is hope a better option) that they'll at least be inter-operable...

You'd wanna hope the three services' future comms were interoperable, as it would make a mockery of the so called "combined arms network-centric jointery". Time will tell...

Just for tanks? Far as I remember, SINCGARS stands for SINgle Channel Ground-Air Radio System, and was designed to improve communications (combined ops) between everyone from ground forces needing air support to the pilots flying the air support aircraft. So I would think it'd be rather foolish to just install the radios in tanks and not other ground and air vehicles. ...but then again, governments are not known for their strokes of brilliance.

I saw something a few months (IDR Sep 05?) back that basically said this. Actually it was more explicit, it referred to the Bowman development of SINCGARS with a bit more added for Aust. In Bowman these radios have I think 5 forms UK/PRC355, PRC356, PRC357, PRC358, VRC359. 355 is manpack, 356 ground role, 357/8 veh clipin, 359 HP veh set. UK uses a PRC354 which is something else for intra-platoon use above PRR, it's been getting a lot of flak because its bigger/heavier that the Clansman it replaces, hardly surprising since it does a lot more. Bowman also include airborne sets, HF sets and high capcity data radio that creates self forming data networks. One of the a/c sets is a SINCGARS derivative.
