| Just as nature abhors a vacuum so shall the nation-state of Congo be carved up by its neighbors.Just ask the Kurds what happens to a region rich with natural resources but also rich in anarchy and petty squabbles. The map will eventually change but at what price?Perhaps the Nigerians with U.N. support could send a peacekeeping force but it seems to me they are stretched pretty thin and have their own internal problems.South Africa could also be a player but are they ready to assume the leadership role in their post-apartheid era?I don't see President Bush getting sucked into this quagmire as I don't see the Congo as being in our 'national interest'.Unless we want to add the Congo to the list of Haiti,Bosnia ,Kosovo, and Macedonia as limitless nation-building; then this situation seems to be up the U.N.'s alley.Good luck. |
