John was trained in an Al-Qaeda camp and actually met Bin Laden. He was given the option of fighting with the 055 Brigade (A crack Al-Qaeda brigade that was attached to the Taliban) or becoming a terrorist. He joined the 055 Brigade and fought against the Northern Alliance. Thus he was both a part of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The big question was whether he helped during the uprising at Mazar-E-Sharif.
