Using Israel as a strawman will not confuse the Iranians. They are not ignorant and know that Israel would never, never launch that type of attack without U.S. approval. The Iranian government claims to be developing nuclear programs for energy! I would be inclined to believe Iranian claims that they are pursuing nuclear energy if Iran were not subject to earthquakes. The devestation at the holy city of Qum in Iran is a prime example. Bombing the Iranian nuclear facilities is a plan that I believe Bush would pursue if he keeps the neo-cons around after the election. However, the President has been badly burned by the neo-cons and would be wise to put them to pasture. Kerry on the other hand might be able to forge a solution diplomatically with China, Japan and Germany to convince the Iranians to mothball their current plans. I doubt the Iranians will welcome the missles with open arms and greet them as a liberating force. No "cakewalk" with the Iranians, either the secular or Islamic fanatics. After 911 there were no Republicans or Democrats. People come together when their country is attacked. I would respectfully suggest to our President that this is a reaction he did not plan for when he "liberated" Iraq That aside, if President Bush were to engage in the folly of bombing Iranian nuclear facilities the following reaction would likely occur: (1) An oil embargo. In order to pressure the United States the Iranians would simply cut off the oil to Japan and Europe (thier primary customers). In addition, other Islamic countries that pump oil could join in the embargo. 2. Worldwide disruption of the oil supply would affect a huge backlash against the United States that could plunge the worldwide economy into recession or depression. All of Europe, Latin America and Asia would line up against the U.S. (imho). Terrorism would likely come to American shores to avenge our action. The fundamental problem with U.S. foreign policy at this time is that it offends important world players and serves as an incubator for budding terrorists. Personally I would favor a plan where the Iranians and Israel disarm and a nuclear free zone is agreed to by all parties concerned. Not likely. When one considers the folly of our current foreign policy I would not rule out an attack following the reelection or reselection of the current regeime.

If the Iranians declare an oil embargo, I'm sure America would invade Iran and bring about regime change. Joytheghost, you are forgetting that America is invincible

One news report I read recently suggested there could be no pre-emptive strike because Iran has learned from the strike against Iraq's nuclear facilities and therefore dispersed the facilities and materials.

Everyones sick of us after Iraq which has been wrong in every way. If we destroy the reactors they'll fight back some passive way and the rest of the world will be on their side
