October Surprise: A US surveillance flight is shot down over Iran and the pilot taken captive during the month of October.
There is speculation that Gary Powers U2 mission over the former USSR was intentionally sent with a mission profile ensuring a shootdown for political purposes. Such an event now would be to the benefit of a candidate who was himself a former POW, whose strongest polling issue was national security, and who was known to favor a military (bomb bomb Iran) solution to Iranian nuclear activity.

That assumes McCain is actually that popular with the military.  Considering how worshipful he is of Petraeus, the statements of Mullen and Mckiernan on Afghanistan haven't exactly been supporting  the McCain script.
