Looks pretty functional. Of course the old BDUs were a functional replacement for the old "fatigue" green uniform. When BDUs were first issued the troops were admonished to not starch, iron or tailor them. Since they replaced the old fatigues and troops had to wear them as a "work" uniform on bases it wasn't long before ironing was approved, then tailoring because "appearance" counted more than function. This ACU apparently has a lot of troop input. That is good to hear and proper for a "professional" army. If the "Colonel Blimps" still rule, then it won't be long before troops will need an extra ACU to keep tailored, starched and pressed just to look pretty on post. Well, it looks good like it is and am glad to see all the user input being attended to by the support commands.

216BC    One pattern for all environments?   6/16/2004 7:45:26 PM
The army web site says this thing is supposed to be camouflage for all terrains. It doesn't look dark enough to me. however, for an urban environment, it's probably perfect. Does that suggest anything about army planning???

This is decent camoflage in some environments, but I think it stands out like a neon sign in temperate forest, and is only slightly less visible against your typical khaki desert background. Grasslands, scablands, mountains, and so forth, its probably pretty good. Anywhere that the environment features alot of greys and few bright colors. It looks like it would be decent in most of central Asia or North American plains or deserts. But in the jungle it might as well be white. Hopefully, they'll make a variaty of patterns in smaller numbers for SoCom to test out in case we end up somewhere completely unexpected.

This uniform is retarded. It shows no "18 months of effort" in developing them. First of all, the camo is not universal for the entire globe. Secondly, VELCRO DOES NOT WORK WHEN WET OR MUDDY. Third, these supposed knee and elbow pad pockets will not keep the pads secure on the joints they're supposed to protect. Fourth, they do not look professional at all. Soldiers should look good on post, so sure, soon enough these too will be starched and pressed. Also, who complained that the old BDUs were too tight?? Someone did because they made these new ACU's baggier. If you need more room than the old BDUs had, you're a giant fat ass and do not belong in the army. Join the Air Force. Wear and tear? They're projecting 6 months wear life on these uniforms. That tells me they're probably good for 4 months until you have to shell out another 80 bucks for a new set. But I can't stress this velcro nonsense enough. Not only does it not work in all conditions, it wears out from use rather quickly, is COMPLETELY untactical as far as noise discipline, and it looks like utter trash. At least SEW your damn patches on. Metal zippers? Are they serious? There's a reason the army did away with them in the first place. They get dirty and jam up, and fires in vehicles and other places will melt them to the soldier's chest. Nice goin high command, you really did a fabulous job on this uniform. We're at war here, focus on something a little bit more pressing than the "press-free" uniforms will you???
